Garmin Edge 1030 - no sound or sound only once in a while

Hello,

I'm experiencing a funny thing with my Edge 1030 since a few weeks: Even if I enabled all sounds (the system settings and in the specifique device pages - i.e. Shimano Di2) the Edge only beeps sometimes. LAst Saturday I did a longer ride (10h) with navigation on and eat and drink memory set to intelligent and sometime the Edge gave a beep, when a turn came up or the eat/drink reminder came up and then again it just fell silent again and only the reminder popped up without a sound - the same with the turn by turn navigation beep.

Does anyone of you experience the same issue? If so: do you have any explanation or even some advice how to fix this. I really like to have the beep reminding me to drink or eat or showing me where to go next.

Thanks a lot

  • Hi Achim,

I had the same issue, on a 1030, random loss of sound. Sometimes it beeps, sometimes just silence. I have the Varia Radar and it was same problem, the 1030 just stopped mid ride beeping for cars approaching. My 1030 worked fine for almost 2 years before this happened.

I got a replacement unit, and the new one never misses a beep.

  • Thank you for your answer - I already thought I'm the only one experiencing that strange behaviour :-)

How did you get the replacement? Did you write directly to Garmin? If so: which address did you use? I might as well try that too, even if my device is now already 4 years old. Still, for a device in this price category I would expect a much longer hazzle free lifetime.

    Cheers

  • Hi, yes Garmin support for your country. If the device is that long past warranty, I wouldn't have to much hope. But better to try than not Slight smile

  • Not sure if this will work for everyone but my edge 1030 had this problem as below and I tried all the suggestions with no luck. As I final try I used a fine toothbrush with damp bristles to clean behind the 4 small holes on the rear. Gently cleaning then blowing out the water several times. Small amounts of dirt came out and has been working perfectly on the three rides since then. Can only assume the dirt was interfering with the sound board.

  • Thanks for the tip.  Mine started playing up exactly like the OP described. I blew into the four holes and so far (fingers crossed) every time I've started it up it has beeped!

  • I'm wondering if it is something to do with the Varia. I never had any problems until a friend started complaining about the Varia beeps and I switched them off when riding with him.  The sound seems to go sometimes when the Varia is not connected but the next ride with the Varia seems to bring it back:-/
