Connection with Mac Mini 2020 (m1 Big Sur)

I recently got a M1 chip mac mini and I'm attempting to connect my EDGE 1030 units to it but they do not mount. I've tested using 2 different units and 3 different cables. (all three cables work with my older mac), so I suspect some firmware issue won't let the mac mount the edge.

Anybody else have any suggestions?

  • Do you have the OS 11.1 update? And what firmware do you have on your 1030? Cheers.

  • Firmware 11.0 on the 1030 and currently, 11.2 beta on the mini. No problems from the first version of Mac OS with the 1030 and mini

  • I have now successfully got it to mount by using a USB-C to USB-a adaptor and my garmin cable. Now signing in to garmin expreess is taking forever. Good times

  • See, it was the cable. There is so much conversion going on between the new USB-C ports and the old legacy ports the Edge uses that many things can go wrong. The newer USB-C cables, like lightning cables, even has a bit of electronics in them to make the connector. Not to bug you, just to point out that these newer generations are really more than just a cable although we call them such.

  • No it wasn't: I used the SAME cable with a USB-a to USB-c adaptor on it. It works via the usbc adaptor usbc port, bot NOT with the cable alone with the usb-a port. Thus the cable is fine.

This tells me there's something up with the apple firmware on the legacy usb-a ports that's different than the usb-c port.

  • Just checked mine. A standard Anker USB A cable worked fine, into one of the two USB-a ports on the mini

  • Respectfully, you don't know what you're talking about when you use the word firmware.

  • Garmin Express crashes when trying to detect an Edge 530 on Mac Mini M1

  • So if it works with everything (PC or even older MAC), and it doesn't work with MAC mini, it's still the fault of everything, except Apple? You got something wrong with your thinking.

  • I have a similar issue with an Edge 520.  I have gone through several data cables (usb-c to usb-micro) and when I connect the Garmin to the M1 through the USB-C port it will show in Disk Utilities but will not mount.  Now if I plug in my Selore USB-C expansion dock and then plug in the same usb-c to usb-micro cable to connect the Edge 520 it then works.

I can figure out why this works through an expansion dock, though it is still USB-C all the way, but it does not work when plugged into any of the USB-C ports on the M1 MacBook.  Initially, I suspected the USB-C ports and Apple's implementation of them, but it only affects the Garmin.

    Did anyone resolve this?
