Connection with Mac Mini 2020 (m1 Big Sur)

I recently got a M1 chip mac mini and I'm attempting to connect my EDGE 1030 units to it but they do not mount. I've tested using 2 different units and 3 different cables. (all three cables work with my older mac), so I suspect some firmware issue won't let the mac mount the edge.

Anybody else have any suggestions?

  • The Edge uses FAT, so make sure this drive format is supported. But I am quire sure it is since this is a format widely used in thumb drives. Then cable is very often the cause. Try different cables. Here is some reading that may help you www.macworld.co.uk/.../

  • I have three cables what work with my old mac. All of them do not work with the new mac. I suspect there is a firmware issue at play, but I don't have the tools to diagnose it.

  • When you plug in the 1030, does it turn off, or remain on?

Does anything new show up in Disk Utility when it is plugged in?

Couldn't hurt to try a new cable, even though you've tried 3 already.

  • nothing shows up in disk util. It does a power cycle when plugged in, but never goes into data mode, even when I try the press and hold the lap button for 30 seconds.

  • Open a support Ticket at Apple and ask what to do. Possible they do something different on the USB-Port on the new m1 (not Intel) Mac Mini.

Also open a support Ticket at Garmin.

Did you look with the "Disk Utility.app" (show all Devices (Command-2)) if it's there but not on the Desktop?

And i found this hint for Edge, possible it will work.

    Force to Mass Storage:

    • Power the device off
    • Press and hold the lap button while plugging into usb
    • Wait 10 seconds and device should go to mass storage

By the way, does a FAT32 formatted USB Stick work on the m1 Mac Mini 2020?

  • Yes, fat USB sticks work, and yes, I tried the push/hold the lap button now many times with both of my 1030 units and with all 5 of my cables. (Which ALL work easily on my old mac).

Nothing shows up in disk utility as the units NEVER go into mass-storage mode.

This is most likely a firmware issue, which no doubt both apple and garmin will deflect saying it's the other guy's problem.

    Sigh.

  • Reality is that it is Garmin's problem and they have to resolve it, because Apple couldn't care less unless this is happening with all kind of other devices.

Is this the procedure you tried it seems a bit more complicated than what you refer to.

"Try getting the unit in to mass storage mode by plugging the unit into the usb port. Press and hold lap/reset while pressing the power button for about 5 seconds. The screen will go blank – let up on the power button at that time but keep holding lap/reset. This should force it to mass storage."

  • I've done that several times with both units and multiple cables. They just don't go into mass-storage mode. I'll submit a garmin ticket.

  • No problem here with a 1030 and a 530 and a Mac M1 mini
