Edge 1030 freezes after Update to FW 11, no reset possible

I did an update yesterday via Garmin Express. The Edge 1030 offered to install the Firmware, which I confirmed. Since then the device hangs with the display lit, showing "GARMIN". Nothing else happens until the battery dies.

Things I tried:

Reset via holding On/OFF Switch: Does obviously reset the power. The screen goes blank for a few seconds, followed by the device automatically rebooting to the state described above. It is not possible to switch the device off.

Holding lower left and lower right switch as soon as the display goes blank: no change.

The same happens when holding only one of the lower switches and holding them together with the power switch (during blank screen, during the whole rebooting process, etc.)

The device does not interact when connected to a PC.

So it seems as if my 1030 is bricked by an official Garmin FW received via the official Garmin Express Software.

Does anyone have an idea how I can revive the "brick"? Does Garmin take responsibility for such an occurrence?

Any help is appreciated, thanks!

Andreas

  • The update is good since  you are alone or one of a very few with that issue. However lots can go wrong when you do a FW update and that does not mean the FW is bad. You may have got a corrupted update file, you may have disconnected the unit without doing a proper eject, you may have 3rd party CIQ apps that screw things up.

Usually when a unit crash on boot one of the following is the cause:

    1) You have a corrupt update file (which are processed on boot). To fix, connect unit to computer via USB, delete any GUPDATE file in Garmin folder. Also delete any file in NewFiles directory.

    2) Your file system is corrupted. Edge uses the FAT system, which is old, basic and not the most reliable, especially if you disconnect the unit without first ejecting the drive. On a Mac use Disk Utility and run a First Aid on the drive, it will offer to fix any irrigulatitiy in the FAT table. On a Windows PC well it's windows, so you will have to find the command line to do the disk check it is something like fschck something something.

I never really had 1) personally but I did have 2) in the past and the mac Disk Utility fixed everything. I then synced and never ran into issues again.

    Have fun

Thanks for the feedback! I opened a support case with Garmin and they offered me to send the device in. I hope for the best, if I get the 1030 back I will only update via SD Card, promise! :-)

  • No, updates are not done via SD card. The SD card is actually quite useless on the device. Updates should be done via USB.

OK, I thought one can download the update and install it from within the device.
