Naming Convention Saving Routes

Hi All,

What naming convention do you use when creating and saving routes in Garmin Connect or your favourite app to be transferred to the Garmin device.

As you know there is a limited number of characters that is displayed on the Edge devices and was wondering how you name all your routes so each one is meaningful.

Do you have a standard format or is random?

    I don't keep many routes on the device. So, it generally doesn't matter too much.

    If I'm doing a trip with multiple routes (something that I do regularly for my bicycle club), I uses a naming convention that is short and that sort properly.

    It's usually a 2-3 letter abbreviation followed by a number followed by distance after a hyphen.

    Mine goes like this

    AAAxxx[G][r]-description

    AAA is the region. I use a standard I created ie CE, LAU, LAN, MTL, QC, VT, NY etc.  are all regions around Montreal where I live.

    xxx is the distance of the route in km

    G is added if it is a gravel route,  Nothing mean road cycling.

    r is added if this is the reversed version of another route

    description - a more readable description like "Tour of Lake Champlain (long)"

    By putting the codified portion of the name first I make sure all routes have a unique short name once the Edge truncate it, which always happen in the description portion.

    This is just my system. I am sure there are others just as good out there. This one works for me.
