Garmin Edge 1030 V.9.1 switching off automatically and when calculating routes

Is anyone experiencing issues with their Garmin Edge 1030 (OS V.9.10) switching off automatically and when calculating routes?

My edge continually switches off when trying to set up or ride a saved route and has also switched off mid-ride, making it pretty usable.

Having reset, reinstalled and updated the GPS, the issue is baffling, and I haven't received any useful responses from Garmin as of yet.

  • You could try connecting to a windows PC and running chkdsk /f across the garmin filesystem

  • Thanks - checked the disk and all looks OK. Will need to dig deeper. All the best

  • Good stuff. Is it a Bontrager device or standard edge? There were some threads mentioning stability issues on Bontrager units related to some of the apps.

  • A standard unit. The machine is doing all sorts of strange things.

I updated to the beta softwares and then restored 9.10 – which made no difference. Post updating the device:

     - In the first attempt to load a course, the course loaded without the machine switching off

     - The second attempt, the machine switched off

    - The third attempt, the machine stalled trying to load the course. I had to hold down the power button to restart

    - The fourth and fifth attempts worked ok – BUT – although a course was active, a standard warning came up saying off course (as expected), when clicking the off course button, a page comes up saying “Currently no route is active” – even though a course is shown on the map - which again is something I haven't seen before..

The courses being loaded, are all 50km or less, were created in Basecamp 4.8.7 (Mac), with a Garmin UK Topo 50 map installed.

On another point, the machine only ever charges to 99%, not 100%. Is that normal?

  • All very strange. All I can suggest is try with the standard installed maps and routes from somewhere like Strava or ridewithgps and see if the same thing happens and at least that might rule out something.
