Long delay in Edge 1030 responding

Having worked beautifully for the last 18 months or so my Edge 1030 has started to play up. It takes ages to respond when I ask it to stop, save a ride or switch off. When it’s in this state I can’t even access the device via my iMac as it can’t be found  

I can get it going again by resetting it (holding the on/off button for 10 seconds) but I feel I shouldn’t have to keep doing this! 

I’ve deleted a lot of the history in case it was holding too much information but that hasn’t sorted the problem. 

Last time it happened it also stopped recording my heart rate mid ride although continued to record mileage and elevation but with a blank screen. I don’t know if this is part of the same problem or an additional one. 

Any advice to get it reliably working again for each and every ride?
