HRM-Run for Cycling with an Edge 1030?

I recently learned from some of my runner friends that their runner-specific Garmin HRM-Run heart rate bands now give them breathing statistics. This sounds interesting to me (I’m a data junkie) so I was wondering if it will work for cycling with an Edge 1030? I know there are other sensor relating to running gait that are not meaningful for a cyclist and I suppose that data would be mostly noise, if it was recorded and reported.

  • As far as I know this is more a device feature rather than a strap feature. I do get breathing data when recording on my forerunner independent of the strap (must support hrv as it is based on an analysis of that) but the edge 1030 does not support that as far as I know.

  • My fenix 6x pro now gives me breathing statistics during the day so I am going to assume it does using the wrist HRM. I do not see how the current chest straps could accomplish this

  • As far as I know Its a firstbeat feature using heart rate variability, and I suspect the firstbeat license is fixed when a device is released, so the 1030 isn't getting these new features as there's a contractual element (I'm guessing here, I have no actual evidence of it).

My 830 gives me breathing stats with the same heart rate strap as my 1030, which doesn't give me breathing stats, so it's definitely an Edge device capability.

  • Thanks for the information. The 1030 does have the option to record the HRV data from a heart rate monitor that support R-R interval reporting and I do keep that option enabled.

Is the implication that while the data may be there (I’m pretty sure my current HRM, the Garmin cycling one does report R-R intervals) it’s up to the device (watch, head unit etc.) to perform the data analysis that allows it to give breathing information?

  • Odd that the flagship Edge model (1030 at the moment) doesn’t include this feature.

  • 1030 is the most expensive but because the 830 is newer it has more features, a faster CPU, better battery life and a better screen. The 1030 plus should close the gap in a few months if the rumours are correct.

  • Hmm… If I had one of the “breathing-enabled” Garmin watches, could I achieve the necessary pairings (HRM paired to both my Edge 1030 and a putative watch), would Garmin Connect integrate the analyses from the watch with those from the Edge and present a single activity with the union of the watch and the Edge data?

  • I'm pretty sure it would be one or the other, imagine the hassle for a poor developer trying to work out how to mash two workouts together into one.
