Does your Edge 1030 fail to shut down?

I have noticed that my Edge 1030 sometimes doesn't shut down when I press "Power Off".  It just shows the screen with the power symbol continuously.

The first time this happened, I ignored it, and the next day when I was ready to ride, the Edge was down to 30% battery level.  I've paid more attention since, and if it doesn't shut down after about 30 seconds, I press the On/Off button and the Lap button simultaneously until the unit restarts, and do the "Power Off" operation again.

So far, it has always powered off on the second try.

  • I experienced same behavior. FW 9

  • I just experienced it too. FW 9

  • I wish I could remember when I installed firmware level 9....

I'm not positive that the issue arose after the firmware update.

  • yes have the same problem FW9

  • Mine frequently acts like it's shut down, but hasn't. The clue is that it shuts down too quickly (when it's not actually shutting down). Pressing the on/off button instantly brings it back to life.

At least it no longer seems to be randomly waking up while charging, a popular trick it was doing (as well as the previous 1000 I owned) that would cause it to try and connect to my Di2 bike and drain the Di2 battery overnight. That wasn't fun at all.

  • Mine started doing this with FW version 8, and it continues to do it on FW 9. One thing I noticed is it always happens when the device is not connected to GPS, you can notice this when you restart the time is all wrong. While it does sometimes occur even when connected to GPS, I have noticed if I force restart the device, let it connect to the GPS signal/update the time, it will shutdown properly. I have taken to the irritating habit of rebooting the device about every workout so that I can properly shut it down. The device is supposed to update the time when connected to the phone but that doesn’t seem to be working either, it will only update properly when connected to satellite signals, and it seems when the time is out of whack it doesn’t shut down properly.

  • Good observation!  I have noticed two times recently that my Edge's time was off.  The first time, it was by a couple of hours - almost Hawaii time rather than Pacific zone time.  The other time, it was by a few minutes.

I've seen this when I am starting a ride.  My usual practice is to put my shoes on, rotate my Vector pedals to wake them up, then turn on the Edge, then finish getting ready (gloves, garage door opener, energy bar, etc.).  That gives the Edge time to find satellites, even though the bike is still in the garage.  When I forget to start the Edge until I'm otherwise ready, I see the Locating Satellites message, and that's when I've noticed the time being wrong.

When I finish a ride, I bring the Edge into the house.  It usually uploads the ride to Garmin Connect, using Wi-Fi.  Then I try to shut it down before connecting to my PC for copying the FIT file and charging.  That's usually when I see the long shutdown behavior - the Edge has probably lost the satellites on that day.

Someone give some solutions. I'm suffering this for a week! There are no solutions on google :). Help!

  • Usually it comes from a - or some corrupted file(s).

If you use a SD-card, put it out and try if it changes anything.

If not, delete (backup on PC) all files in folders activities and courses.

In most cases I have heared of, that helps.
