Edge 1000 Distance Recording Issue

Hello.

My garmin edge 1000 does not record mileage above 56.8 miles. This happened today whilst using the turbo trainer, and also 2 years ago whilst out on a ride. Although the speed, cadence, HR etc were all being shown on the unit as normal, the distance recorded did not go above 56.80 miles. All the sensors that I am using are Garmin ones.

This is a replacement unit supplied to me in 2017 after my original garmin edge which was purchased in 2016 went faulty.

Another issue with this unit is that when I use the ‘Indoor Cycling’ function, the unit shuts down after I swipe through several screens.

I am very disappointed with these products. I am in the process of training for a 500 mile charity ride in Scotland next year but I am no longer confident that my garmin edge is up to the job and I am already looking to replace with another brand.

  • I've been on the Edge 1030 since it was first introduced.  I had to look back on Garmin Connect to September, 2017 to find a 100km ride with my Edge 1000.  No problems recording the distance.  If I looked back further, I would be able to find even longer rides, up to 201km, all done on a single battery charge.

All that said, the Edge 1030 is truly a big advance over the Edge 1000 in battery life.  I have ridden over 25 hours on a single charge.  I have an Edge battery pack as well, and I've ridden over 52 hours using the two together.

The Edge 1000 isn't likely to support you for the duration of a 500 mile event without charging it daily.  But it can be used with a battery pack plugged into the USB port, to increase battery life substantially.  (You can tape a "lipstick" battery to your stem, and plug it into your Edge 1000 with a short USB cable.)

Both the 1000 and the 1030 models have a feature called "battery save mode" which can extend the life of the battery by blanking the screen until the unit needs to tell you something (like time for a drink, or the next turn if you're navigating).

I would contact Garmin Support about the distance recording issue.  You might also try backing up all your data, and doing a device reset.  (Read about that before you do it!)

But I would seriously consider upgrading to the Edge 1030 as well, before I would consider changing brands.
