Mapping Updates take forever

Why do mapping updates take forever? I plugged into Garmin Express looking for the 5.20 update and saw my maps needed updating. It reckons it's going to take 2 hours. It's downloading at less than 4MB/s, and I need to leave the device plugged in. Why not download it and allow installation at a convenient time? Can the maps be downloaded directly from anywhere?

This is a 5GB or so set of tiles that need to be downloaded and then copier over a slow USB connection. That is why. They are rare so this is really not an issue. If you want to do it at a convenience time it is up to you, the dialog did not force you to do it on the spot.

They could knock a decent chunk off the time by having a faster internet connection :-)

I got offered the update this morning, it told me 3 hours though. Initially I planned to let it run in the background whilst working, but it slowed the laptop down so much I abandoned and will do it later, when I get home. Whilst I can understand Martin868's point about the transfer over USB, I also agree that the whole process would be much quicker if the rotten download speeds cold be increased.

It took 45 minutes with GIG speed internet. Now that the map update is on the device I am getting 3 dots above the word Garmin. Small text below says Loading COurses, workouts, and locations...

Do not do this before a ride. Do it when you have A LOT of time.

It took 45 minutes to down load the maps with GIG speed. Another 15 minutes for the device to reset itself.

Do not do this before a ride. Budget A LOT of time when it is raining perhaps.
