When folowing a course I do not have a map screen.

I find if I follow a course the map screen becomes a blue line, I guess in a grid based system this is acceptable, But where the roads are irregular, it is very difficult. The Edge 520 worked better than that and with the same Open street maps.

Just back from a weekend in Holland, And with a 5 ways on the road and a cycle path round the outside the blue line was little help. Further from Hoek van Holland to Den Haag the blue line was ok west -east and slightly north but for the reverse journey the blue line had to be mental reversed, not easy at speed.

Why is it that it is advertised with Maps but as soon as you follow a course, You can not use the advertised maps.  The way I see it is with all the side roads as thin black lines you have visual clues that you are two turns before your next action or this has 5 turns I need the third. etc.

  • ???

The "thin blue line" has nothing to do with maps or courses. It just shows your recorded track.

If you are using a course file, you should be seeing a "purple" (it's actually magenta with a black border) line tracing the path of the course.

You don't need maps to use a course file (you should see the "purple" line even without a map).

It doesn't seem you were using a course file at all.

Note that you can have the unit calculate a course (without using a course file). When you do that, you'll see a magenta line showing the path of the course. Maps are required to calculate a course.

If you want "fancier" turn instructions (big white arrows) when using a course file, you need to enable "turn guidance" on the unit ("turn guidance" also requires maps to work).

  • Now this beast came with open streetmaps for Europe, And I only get a single line if i load a course. This is useless for any course of age, you are merrily folowing the course and the traffic ahead is irregular, so slow down and find a flood. Now with only a line how do you divert. Ah! take a map, it will be soggy before its needed. but i replaced my garmin 520 with a 1030 because it should be better but seems to warn me of a turn or map difference (garmin Vs Open Strett mays up to 1000M away.

  • I'm not quite understanding your situation but it may be that you don't have the map enabled. What maps are enabled? As dpawlyk said, if you are following a course you should see the magenta line.

  • Keep in mind that these devices are used by many thousands of people in Europe and elsewhere without whatever problem you are having. So, it seems likely, that in this case it might not be a problem with the device.

It's not clear what problem you are having. Without being more clear, it's unlikely people will be able to provide any help.

I realize that that might be do to a language problem. It might work better if you describe your problem in your native language and see if Google Translate can be used.
