Gamin 1030 does not show maps

Yesterday I decided to use Garmin Express on Mac to sync my activities. It seems to work well, but in the meantime the Express application suggested that I might update maps. I clicked OK. Then my next nightmare began. The application was using my entire Wi-Fi channel. I was not able to load a single page while Express downloaded some data. I waited a few hours and decided to leave it overnight. during the night the application kept my screen on and, unable to sleep, I closed the lid. In the morning I checked the result and it said that the update failed. Now my device does not show any maps at all and the Express says sync complete and does not offer anything to fix the problem. In fact it does not even say there is a problem. What am I supposed to do now? I am in the middle of my vacation and the last thing I want is to spend hours trying to resurrect faulty device.
  • When you say it doesn't show any maps have you looked in Map Information to see if the map is selected or is there no map to be selected?
  • Apparently there is a button called "Reinstall Maps". After I clicked it, it quickly showed downloading progress. I guess the data was already in cache. Then it updated the device, which took about an hour. Finally I had maps 2018.20, but still I did not see any roads on the map.

Then I realized that when I scale too far, Garmin maps only shows a rudimentary map, even major roads disappear. For some reasons, I changed the scale and that's why I did not see anything. This is strange because there is plenty of space on the screen, but it shows almost nothing.

So apparently I had to disable basemap. When basemap is enabled, Garmin 1030 shows almost nothing in low res scale. But still there is some scale when no roads are shown. If I remember correctly this worked much better with old maps.
  • Glad you got it sorted. Once you came back and said the maps weren't listed in Map Information the next step was to point you at the reinstall option but you've already figured that :)
  • This year I have the same problem, but this time reinstalling maps did not help.

  • I check and found that it only shows the base map. There are other maps that are not relevant to my device. I do not see the routable EU cycling map that Garmin connect claims to have installed. Another sleepless night with Garmin. :( I did not buy this device to give me troubles.

  • It's past 2 am here and I am still looking for a solution. Currently I am trying a new version of Garmin Express, which was mentioned here - forums.garmin.com/.../missing-european-maps

  • I have to wait for another 20 minutes because it is downloading my maps again. I cannot leave the app because it may break when mac goes into sleep, so I cannot sleep too. Such a bad experience. I should not have updated.

  • I agree.  I have had a terrible experience with the software on the 1030.  I had no trouble with the 1000.  I waited before upgrading hoping all bugs would be fixed.  I wish I had never bothered.  I have lost activities, I have no maps, connection to Connect is a lottery.  I too have spent hours trying to locate lost activities and update from Garmin Express.  I did not expect this.  Currently I am very disappointed with this device; it appears to be a downgrade in functionality.
