Firmware 4.0 and Radar Safety Concern

Former Member

I wanted to share safety concern with the latest firmware update for the Garmin Edge 1030

My configuration is as follows, for the last several months (except the firmware upgrade)

1. Garmin 1030, updated with latest firmware on 5/6/2018
2. Bontrager ION 800 Lumen Front Light - ANT+
3. Wahoo Fitness Heart Rate Strap ANT/BLE
4. Garmin VariaTm Rearview Radar
5. Garmin Edge Remote
6. SRAM RED eTAP

Safety Concern:

Prior to installed 4.0 firmware, I would say that Garmin Radar was close to 100% perfect, with no issues. It never missed a car, and would pick up multiple cars 100%

What i have noticed after the firmware upgrade is the following

1. Not picking up a car that turns into my line that's within ~150 feet of behind me. I observed this twice, and never before the firmware upgrade.

2. More of a concern, its seems to have an issue picking up multiple cars behind me. If their are 3 or 4 cars behind me, it seems to loose the last car and will go green prematurely. I have noticed that it goes green before the last car has reached me or just as it passes me.

3. The system never did that before the firmware upgrade

Usage Issues:

1. ANT Light Battery Status is not usable. It's so small, can we get a % vs. the small icon for battery life.

2. Edge remote is ~60% reliable, unless you turn off the phone connectivity. Which is ok as i use WIFI uploads

Enclosed is my email address,

If you want to talk over the phone about the concerns, give me an email, and I will reply with my contact info

also, can i get the binaries to downgrade the firmware back to 3.9?

  • I think I mentioned this in another thread, but I too had issues with 4.00 First ride was OK, but second ride with 4.00, my 1030 simply would not connect to the Varia radar. Turned the Varia off and on during the ride, still never found it. At the end of the ride (which I cut short), I hit stop on the 1030, and magically it then found the Varia. In my old age, I don't want to experiment with what I feel is a safety issue, and downgraded the 1030 back to 3.90. Not a problem since.
  • I again tried Edge 520 for a short ride and it worked fine. Its something wrong with Edge 1030 and 4.0 firmware. I hope Garmin will give this high priority stamp as it is serious safety issue. Varia Radar is only reason I did not go with Wahoo and would not swap Garmin to any other brand, if it doesnt have Radar support. It is marvelous equipment. Oh, it was :-(

  • Hi All,

I recently purchased the TL300. Even though it is a Varia unit and as started on their website

"The Varia line of cycling awareness products also includes rearview radar that can alert you — through compatible Edge bike computers¹ or a head unit — when traffic behind you is getting close."

I can not get it to show up as a radar on my Edge 520 or Edge 1000. The light function works perfectly.

Has anyone else had success getting the radar working on the TL300?

  • The TL300 is a tail light. The radar unit is either RTL500 or RTL510
