Edge 1030 is NOT compatible with latest MacBook USB-C adapter

Everyone should be aware that the Edge 1030 is not compatible with the latest MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, 2017) which uses USB-C. The Apple adaptor which provides standard USB connection apparently blocks the 1030. I have been trying to consistently connect the device to my MacBook over several days, sometimes it works but mostly it doesn't. Rang Garmin who confirmed the adapter is the problem. Their response was that there were no plans to fix this and that I could try buying a micro-USB to USB-C cable or return the 1030. There was no guarantee that the cable would work. There may be a fix for this in the future, but no guarantee. Or I could use the 1030 using mobile/Garmin Connect with no PC.
Not sure what to do in this instance - what do others think?
  • If you have the iPhone, use the Garmin Connect app on that. I very seldom use the USB connection to the computer. I am able to get the updates through blue tooth connection of the phone and Edge. Not sure if Connect is on Android or not (someone will be able to confirm).
  • yes in Android the Connect app works. I never use the computer USB port. No reason to return your Garmin 1030.
  • We are investigating the MacBook connection issue mentioned here. I will update the thread when we have more information.
  • i_DaveJ could you provide a link to the Apple adaptor cable you are using please?

Never use the USB port? How do you update Maps?

An adaptateur USB to USB-C cost around 1$/Euro give it a try.

In response to various comments about "try a cheap cable" - yes that would be one approach but, 1 - isn't this Garmin's responsibility to test the various options, and 2 - what if it doesn't work, or what if it does work but Garmin stop supporting that cable, and 3 - what if Garmin brings out their own USB-C cable later and that's the only one that can be used? Shouldn't Garmin provide/pay for this? I don't mind the cost per se but I would expect to give direction i.e. hoping 'Administrator' provides this.

& to everyone else - yes, I will use mobile to interact with my device, but as MaGo77 says, there are the occasional things that you would want to do on PC - and to provide another example, what about when you want to update a course and send it to the device in one easy step.

and what if the latest Macbook was still just a drawing on a board when Garmin committed the 1030 to production?

12" MacBook was introduced March 2015. You can draw your own conclusions...
  • This appears to be a more generic Macbook issue than something specific to the Edge. See
