I have enabled, disabled, and re-enabled the 'save to memory card' a few times but it still saves rides to the internal memory. The card does show up when I connect the 1030 to my computer and I see that the Garmin created folders for all the data - including an activities folder, but the rides are stored in the device's directory structure rather than on the card. Can Garmin please confirm this issue or suggest how to work around it?
I know this is obvious but have you checked to ensure that, in the Data Recording setting, you have selected Memory Card? (default is Internal Storage) I know you posted you have, but I am wondering if it has remained Memory Card.
Thats a good point (in spite of being obvious), so thanks, but yes, I did check - before it turned into a brick - and it was saying to write to the memory card. I switched it to internal and back a few times but it kept saving to the internal memory. Right now it does not matter since it has turned into a paperweight with the Garmin logo on the screen for the last three hours. I guess the battery life is longer after all.
How is the card formatted? The fact that the card does not show up when the Edge is connected to a PC suggests that it is either not correctly formatted or not correctly inserted.
My wild guess is that the card was, or became, corrupted and the Garmin is choking trying to read (or write to) it causing the lockup. Have you tried a reset (hold on/off button for a full 10 sec.)? As a last resort, I would perform a factory reset but... be sure to remove the Micro sd card before you do. Is this a new card or previously used, or swapped from another Garmin? And as aweatherall pointed out, there is the question of formatting.
With over 6 GB of free storage on the 1030 I'm not sure if you really need to be using the card for storage. Yes it should work, but I would suspect it is more likely to be used for maps than for for activity storage.
I think I was not clear. The card DOES show up when I connect the 1030 to my computer. It even shows the folders that the Garmin creates for all the content. But the activities continue to be saved to the internal memory, not to the Garmin/Activities folder that the device created on the card. FYI: I was able to un-brick my 1030. I have reset it, re-configured it, but still, all rides save to internal memory. The card, by the way, works ok when I put it in my 1000.
Did not read it above, but probably the SD card should be formatted as FAT32 like other Garmin devices need too. Also if formatted FAT32 already, reformat may be worth a try.
