I am using ClimbPro on a Forerunner 965 in Trail Running mode, and I am experiencing a behavior that makes the feature difficult to use on rolling terrain.

The issue is that very small elevation changes or even flats are detected as active climbs/descents.

For example, during a flat section, ClimbPro may display something like:

Descent: 1.0 km / -7 m

Instead of showing:

Next climb in X km
or
Next descent in X km

As a result, the watch seems to stay permanently inside a “climb” or “descent” segment, and there are no neutral sections between climbs.

This makes ClimbPro difficult to interpret in trail running, especially on rolling terrain where there are many minor elevation variations. The feature becomes much less useful because it does not clearly distinguish significant climbs/descents from minor terrain undulations.

What I would ideally expect is the same behavior as on Garmin Edge cycling computers:

1. While navigating, the device stays on the navigation screen.
2. When approaching a meaningful climb or descent, ClimbPro announces it (“next climb/descent”).
3. During the actual climb/descent, the watch automatically switches to the dedicated ClimbPro screen.
4. If there is a navigation turn during the climb, navigation instructions should still take priority.
5. At the end of the climb/descent, the watch automatically returns to the navigation screen.

This workflow feels much more intuitive and usable for trail running.

It would be very helpful to have:

- A minimum climb/descent threshold (distance, grade, or elevation gain/loss)
- Smarter detection of meaningful climbs,
- A proper “Next climb/descent in” state during flat and false-flat sections.

Is this expected behavior on the Forerunner series, or are other trail runners experiencing the same issue?

my personal records not appearing

on garmin connect i see old PB ot top 5 from many years ago. but any tiems i do now that should be top 5 dont appear.

After firmware update brightness very low on screen when outside - part 2

Ok, few days later factory reset display brightness is low again.

I've tried the steps outlined in "Forerunner 965 - Blue Triangle, FR 965 Graphic, crashes, and repeates" as it seemed most similar to my experience, but still no result.

Are there any reccomendations for how I can set this watch up and get it to function properly, I had initially exchanged for a 955 and had similar problems ... is there a trick to these exchange watches?

I wear my watch but do not start an activity when I ride. My Edge 850 tracks the ride. When I have finished the ride, it syncs but suddenly I have these huge intensity numbers. I did a ride with my wife where my HR never got out off zone 2 and yet my intensity minutes were through the roof. I read somewhere that it is a bug and to turn off bluetooth on your watch while you ride and only turn it back on once the Edge has synced to Connect. Tried that, same issue.

Pictures of the ride attached.

My interface only shows the quick timer option and already saved timers.
Garmin Forerunner 965, software version 27.09.

Walking activity is recorded during which recording was paused, and after resuming the pause, there were GPS issues (poor reception, jamming). After saving this activity, the watch resets its training data for the past four weeks — the status changes to "detrained," weekly mileage is reset, total and peak load are zero.

Consequently, the predictor goes crazy, and the training recommendations are based on the assumption that I haven't done anything for four weeks.

Moreover, all running workouts remain in the activity list on the watch.

This issue occurred four times, and one of them even affected the current time and daily step count.

So, I have some questions.

Has anyone else encountered this?

Is there a way to avoid this (other than not pausing walking tracking)?

Is there any way to restore my fitness data other than waiting a few weeks for the watch to collect training data again?

Even on easy efforts, it sometimes fluctuates by more than 30 seconds per kilometer. It feels like the pace suddenly drops and then overshoots in the other direction.

For example, I might be running at a steady 6:00 min/km pace, when it suddenly drops to 6:30. Then, after around 30 seconds (timing varies), it jumps to 5:30 min/km before gradually returning to the correct pace.

I tested different GPS settings (GPS only,..,All Systems + Multiband). While the higher-accuracy modes improved things slightly, they didn’t solve the issue.

Eventually, I remembered a setting that controls how often data is recorded. I expected to find it under GPS settings, but it’s actually located under:
Settings → System → Data Recording

It was set to “Smart” (possibly changed by an update or reset, since I remember it was set to "1 second"). After switching it back to “Every Second,” the pace readings became stable again—even using standard GPS modes.

The manual describes this setting as:

“Data Recording: Sets how the watch records activity data. The Smart recording option (default) allows for longer activity recordings. The Every Second recording option provides more detailed activity recordings, but may not record entire activities that last for longer periods of time.”

In my opinion, this description is too vague and doesn’t mention the potential impact on pace accuracy. Also, the setting would make more sense under GPS-related options.

From my experience, the “Smart” recording algorithm isn’t reliable enough for running. I even received pace alerts (too fast/slow) during steady runs due to these fluctuations. This occurred in open areas without any obvious GPS obstruction.

My total daily expenditure measured by the Forerunner 965 for that day was 4,409 kcal (2,572 kcal from activity and 1,837 kcal at rest). I have the feeling that the Forerunner 965 did not include my active energy expenditure of 3,608 kcal, which was recorded by the Edge 850 during the ride. I would have expected my total expenditure that day to be: Rest 1,837 kcal + Activity 2,572 kcal (965) + Activity 3,608 kcal (850), which adds up to 8,017 kcal. Can someone please help me understand how the energy‑expenditure values are recorded, what they mean, and whether this might be an error?

The correct value is probably 1,837 kcal for rest (965) + 3,608 kcal for cycling (850) + about 150 kcal for other daily activities (965), which comes to roughly 5,600 kcal.
