Everyday update?

Why has my watch been updating every day for at least two weeks?

  •   - In my experience, this usually has to do with corrupt update file downloads. I recommend connecting your device to a computer, then deleting the contents of the RemoteSW folder as well as the GUPDATE.GCD file. Empty the recycle bin/trash, then disconnect your watch. Allow your Forerunner to power up like normal.

After that, reconnect your watch to the computer and use Garmin Express to sync and see if any new updates are available. If you don't already have it, Garmin Express is a free desktop application available for download here: https://garmin.com/express

  • I tried it, but result is still the same. Everyday update.

  • Thanks for giving that a try. Can you walk us through what is happening step-by-step? If possible, include any pictures/video of what you're experiencing.

  • I have the same issue. Unfortunately, removing RemoteSW isn’t possible because the watch is mounted in read-only mode when connected to a PC.

I found a workaround online that involves holding the power button for about 45 seconds. Supposedly, this puts the watch into a mode where the PC has full access and allows you to delete RemoteSW, but it didn’t work for me.

For now, the only workaround I’ve found is to disable automatic updates and manually check for updates from time to time.

  •   Have you tried a different Garmin charging cable and made sure that you are plugging it directly into the computer? An adapter can also cause issues too with the device not being seen by the computer.

Also, I'm not sure with what you mean by "read-only mode". On the computer when you have the watch plugged in can you upload a picture of what you see in the file explorer?

  • I am using the original cable, and since the device is recognized by my PC, I’m confident that all four USB wires are functioning correctly. I’m also not using any USB adapter or hub.

Regarding the screenshot, I don’t have time to provide one at the moment. However, whenever I try to remove RemoteSW, Windows reports that I don’t have the required permissions. As an IT, I can confirm this is not a Windows issue. I have also tested it on macOS with the same result.

Looking through the forum, I can see that many users are experiencing issues with the current firmware. At this point, I’m hoping Garmin releases a patch as soon as possible.

  •  Can you try removing the device from Express (you would right click over the picture of your watch in Express and select Remove) then re-add your device again? After it is added go ahead and try pressing and holding the top left button to power the watch off while it is still plugged in then use the same button to turn it back on.

    Did that make any difference?

  • I apologize for the delay over the summer. It seems the problem has gone away. This wasn't the first time it happened, so if it happens again in the future, I'll let you know.
