Hi All,
Forerunner 935 software version 14.10.
Swim activity (using HRM-Tri) is listed in 935 activity history with all details but not in garmin connect.
Attempted sync multiple times without success.
Tried manual import and received the following error : "we don't support the file type you tried to import".
My understanding is that file got corrupted somehow. Is this a known error? Is there a way to recover file?

without the file, no solution 
check if you can repair your file with help of FitFileRepairTool
or
with your consent we can have a look at your file with FitFileRepairTool
zip the fit file and upload here in the forum, or provide a link to it on a cloud storage

By downloaded data was not complete my understanding is that downloaded data from hrm-tri was not complete. is it correct?

Any way to prevent same from happening?

try these procedures...
after pressing stop wait a while before saving the activity
or start a manual download from within the swim activities history after saving
or (am not sure about this) start a manual download from the menu after pressing stop
