USB cable problem

After some sporadic failures my FR935 is now not recognized anymore as mass storage (tried several systems and ports). Charging still works though. I hope it is just the cable, but the new cable hasn't arrived yet, so I can't be sure it isn't an issue with the watch.
The connection points have been cleaned and dried, no difference. The watch/cable connection feels solid mechanically. Wiggling the cable doesn't make a difference. I measured the cable leads individually with a multimeter and they all seem OK.
Has a full (master) reset ever fixed this or a similar problem for someone?
I can't easily try the master reset myself because I rely on apps and settings that can only be transferred via USB, so performing a full reset without having USB data transfer available would render the watch useless (for my purposes).
  • Saw this just this morning. Appeared the 935 had locked up. Hard reset, press and hold power button for 15s until turns off, then restarted. Also rebooted the MacBook Pro too. Connected fine then, albeit with a few seconds delay.

As an aside, the 935 still locks up on occasion when connected to a Mac, whether laptop or iMac.
  • I'm starting to wonder if the watch locking up during/after conecting to a aystem via USB, might be due to a slowly deteriorating cable connection.. at first my watch used to freeze after disconnecting, then started rebooting when connected, then intermittently lost the connection and now doesn't connect via USB at all.
I'm most curious if a new cable fixes the problem.. and can't wait to explore the error logs on the watch, once it connects again

Edit: just found this thread on Fenix 5X forum: https://forums.garmin.com/forum/on-the-trail/wrist-worn/fenix-5x/154534- A bad cable connection seems likely, considering the number of posts.
  • I think I may have identified the source of the problem; while examining the cont act points on the watch, the ones in the middle showed less wear than the outer ones, and the wear pattern looked as if the contact with the pin on the cable had always been a bit off-center. I suppose that with regular use, the connector becomes a little 'loose'. Not the greatest design :(
With the watch face-down flat on the table while pressing the cable connector straight down, I had a successful USB connection.

Edit: this was an irreproducible result. Sending watch to Garmin for repair, back to my Epix for now.
