Watch stops recording distance during activities

I have noticed in the past month or so that my watch stops recording distance for some reason, specially during open water swims. I have been using it for almost 2 years now, this is the first time I saw this happening. I swim every day, freestyle open water, never had an issue as far as distance covered is concerned. I know how to keep my hand out of the water in order to get GPS signal, never had a problem until last month. The same happened during a walk activity. The watch suddenly paused recording distance, but it kept on recording time. My pace during swimming is always between 1:30-2:10 or something per minute. In the photo below of today's swim you can see something went totally wrong. I am just wondering what that might be..

Take a look at your map. It must have lost the GPS signal. You may want to keep an eye on it during your swim at fixed intervals.

Yes, it lost gps signal today somewhere along the way. The map shows a totally different route after a certain point. I am wondering if switching to ‘recording every second of an activity’ instead of smart recording, and to GPS + GLONASS instead of GPS only, will make any difference

Recording every second is said to increase accuracy, but not sure that it could prevent signal loss. Some people have better luck adding GLONASS. You'll have to play around and see which gives best results.

Recording every second (in theory) would increase the accuracy of recording the track (not the GPS signal itself) if the swim is not in a straight line. For the track below, it could cut off the turns.

Open water swimming requires special position filtering algorithms, so every second recording does not apply anyway.

No, it would not. This is not how smart recording works.
