How to accurately record calories for swimming

I used my Garmin Forerunner 35 today whilst swimming and then walking for a few minutes. There isn't a "Swim" workout function, so I started a "Cardio" workout on the watch. It recorded 61 minutes and 552 calories. But it has also counted about 2000 steps and awarded me several hundred calories for that too. I can see from the timeline that the steps were at the same time as the swimming.

What do other people do when they swim, to record the calories accurately?

Would it be better not to start an activity at all on my watch, and let it calculate the calories during that time just from the heart rate?

Thanks.
