HRM 600 incorrect daily step count when paired to Forerunner 970 and Connect app

I have a Forerunner 970 and HRM 600.   If I use the HRM 600 with no watch and start an activity with the Connect app it adds to my daily steps properly when it syncs with the Connect app.

If the HRM 600 is paired to the watch and the Connect app, if I do an activity like hiking on the watch, the HRM 600 massively overcounts my daily step totals.

Here is an example:

Daily steps before hike:  3302

Hiking activity steps:  8448

Daily steps after stopping watch activity:  11,000 (rounded due to watch face)

Daily steps after HRM 600 syncs with Connect app:   21,000

I thought TrueUp was supposed to prevent this from happening?  I don't want to have to unpair my HRM 600 from the Connect app every time I use it with a watch activity.   Is there a fix planned for this?

Thanks in advance.

Yes, you are right, it does not. But if there is a bug affecting your configuration, causing the double counting, then you can wait a few months before getting the fix. For that reason, it is wiser to use the method that works now. You need the app to start the activity only if you do not have the watch anywhere in the proximity before the workout.

  • It works totally fine for Martial Arts from the Connect App.  The only issue is having the HRM paired with the Connect app and using HRM with the watch at the same time for hiking, etc.   I am just not doing that which is my workaround.    I would also have to check if the watch martial arts activity would pickup the steps from the HRM, which is usually the issue.   So I have a workaround, my purpose for asking this question was to make sure Garmin knows there is an issue to fix.   Thanks for the suggestion though.

  • Since you are using hiking poles while wearing the 970 and using the HRM 600 it is possible that, if this is the only time it is happening, due to the flexing of your wrist during those hike activities if it is messing with the function of which device is trying to be the predominant recording device for that activity.

So if you lose HR on your watch due to flexing your wrists the HRM 600 is getting pushed to record that data, or vice versa. I would start the activity from Connect with the HRM 600 if you are wanting that to be the primary source to count steps and HR during specific activities.

  • I can easily replicate it without hiking poles.   There is definitely an issue with TrueUp and steps being double-counted on watch and HRM.

  • Were you able to figure this out?  I bought the HRM 600 bc my watch wasn't counting steps on my walking pad, but the HRM seems to be sending double.

  • Were you able to figure this out?

Well, in time being before Garmin fixes the bug, use just the strap standalone without the watch for recording your treadmill activities.
