Vivosmart 5 Stress Levels Consistently HIGH

Every post I can find on this is locked for some reason. Coincidence?

I’ve had my HRV measured on a couple different devices and it was always very variable and a sign of good health. But, the Vivosmart 5 has my stress levels extremely high all the time. The only rest measurements I ever see are while sleeping and less than half the time there. Besides giving me a Stress level reading that suggests I should get to a Cardiologist as soon as possible, since this is also used as a sleep quality factor I hardly even get a Sleep Score higher than 50 and a battery level higher than 25. Since the HRV numbers themselves are not displayable on this device, I have no insight into what measurements are being recorded and used. As referenced above, others have had this same or similar issue and those discussions appear to have gotten closed quite promptly.
And, yes, I’m on the most recent firmware and have done several cold restarts. I haven’t set it back to factory settings yet and started all over, which seems a bit extreme since everything else seems to be working just fine. And, my heart rate measurements are fine and consistent with other devices and my resting heart rate puts my physical age back at least 5 years. It’d be even more if I wasn’t being dinged for stress and sleep, though.

I’d be better off with the stress indicator turned off and with it not being used or at least not weighted so heavily for the Sleep score.

So, is there a known problem with this that either can’t or won’t be fixed, or am I probably going to drop dead anytime?
Is anyone else having this issue? Please respond quickly before this thread gets locked too.

  • That is a shame.  I wish they would just make it so you can turn off the stress monitor.

  • Upgraded my Vivosmart4 to a Vivosmart 5 due to a broken strap, not only I lost the floor count, but lately the device is showing high stress levels and no sleep quality higher than 45. I have  swapped the V5 for my old V4 and measures got back to normal, so there must be am issue with the vivosmart5. Resetting the device to factory seems to solve the issue for a couple of weeks but then it goes south again...

Will any upcoming firmware update fix this issue or I better look at wahoo or fitbit straps?

  • Very glad to have found this! I had garmin vivosmart 4 for four years and got both high and low stress measurements generally quite in tune with real life stress/rest periods. I always took the measurements with a pinch of salt but they served quite well as approximate indicators. As the device just broke down irreparably, I had to switch to vivosmart 5 - and now stress is constantly very high, battery under 20 - and this even though I finally took two days off and spent them lounging in bed with no worries and sleeping whenever I felt like it... I almost thought I had got some mysterious disease overnight :D Seems something is very wrong with vivosmart 5 in this respect.

  • Glad to have found this thread. I have exactly the same problems with vivosmart 5. P.S. My previous reply never appeared so perhaps they have locked this thread, too.

  • Update 10 days later: I actually retrieved my old broken vivosmart 4 from the waste-basket in the hopes of mending it and going back to it: vivosmart 5 is so much worse in more ways than showing constant high stress 24/7 with no reason. The most illogical change from vivosmart 4 is counting all those stress minutes as Intensity Minutes even when I have spent the whole day lounging/sleeping and then CONGRATULATING me for reaching my Intensity Minutes goal! Vivosmart 4 counted Intensity Minutes - logically - only when I was active and exerting myself in movement. They thus showed something meaningful - amount of high-intensity exercise. In vivosmart 5 they are totally meaningless. And, what is even worse: they form the basis of Active (sic!) Calories. So I spend a day lounging - which in vivosmart 4 would have led to ZERO Active Calories, because, clearly, I was NOT active - but in vivosmart 5 I amass lots of "active" calories just because of the stress/unnaturally high heartbeat. Which leads to a considerably higher overall calorie count without the slightest justification. It is almost as if I were given leave to stress-eat myself into obesity!

So, while vivosmart 4 gave me a great deal of useful information, vivosmart 5 serves barely as a step-counter. Not to mention the stress it itself creates by constantly admonishing me that I am near death with all this never-ending "stress" ...
