Vivosmart 4 as a trusted device for Android unlocking

I cannot add the Vivosmart 4 watch as a trusted bluetooth device to unlock the Android phone.

The message I get on the phone is "Tap Bluetooth device to confirm". Tapping the watch doesn't work and there is no message on the watch..

I removed unpaired the watch twice, trying to add it as a trusted device before pairing with Garmin Connect.

It seems Xiaomi phones have the smart unlock feature available only to their bluetooth devices. The workaround implies rooting the phone. I tried manually starting the Google's Smart Unlock app, but it fails loading. Xioami has its own app.
