Bug tracker (Early adoption fun)

This could be the main thread to collect all Bugs and Feature requests. Add your feature requests and observed bugs and I'll add them to the top post keeping everything neat. If you can confirm behavior please let me know as well, so it will be easier to isolate the source of the error.

Firmware Version: 2.10
Firmware Version: 3.00 (current)

Bugs:

1. Battery save mode is disabled/stops after leaving a navigated course and rerouting has occurred. The setting for it is still turned on though, both drop down menu and settings. Update: The Battery save mode is also disabled if a sharp end ahead warning wakes up the screen.
Started activity-tracker and after the normal time screen turned off. A few minutes later suddenly it turned on whith the message, that I can save battery life, if I don’t turn the screen on to many times. I confirmed. Afterwards saving mode didn’t work at all. [Rudgas, ndugu1]

2. When an Off course warning occurs, the map screen freezes until the screen is pressed again, showing the position indicator in the wrong place/not moving. Does not happen ever time [bikepc01, Rudgas]

3. When calculating a round-trip course, the warning "Route calculation error" is shown behind the "Searching" screen. The beep occurs, but the error field is only shown after the searching field is closed. Multiple error fields can be present at the same time. [bikepc01, Rudgas]

4. The sharp bend ahead warning had a font error, where the outline of the text was much bigger than it should be. Warnings are nearly illegible at times (very fuzzy fonts), especially when there is lots of text. [Rudgas, Markow]

4.1. Had sharp bend ahead warnings popping up occasionally. Do not have a clue yet when and why they occur, but I got them only while "Off Course" warning was active. Also happens when no route/course is selected while recording ride and all navigation prompts are turned off. [bikepc01, Rudgas]

5. Route recalculation on imported routes from the app (not tried on other imported routes) that contains turn-by-turn will reroute to the point where the route was left rather than the nearest point of the route. [Rudgas]

6. Set elevation does not work, after entering a number, it disappears shortly afterwards and displays "0m". [Rudgas]

7. On occasion on long rides when swiping down to use widgets, the window in which the widget is to appear goes blank, and the unit freezes and stops tracking. [Markow]

8. Charging the device while in use, in the drop-down menu, the battery text is broken. Off the screen to the left is what appears to be a Bolt, followed by a "-" character. The battery level in percent within the battery is displayed correctly. [Rudgas]

9. Distance for upcoming turns on turn warnings does not count down at top of map screen that pops up over a data screen. (The countdown does work properly at the bottom of the pop-up map screen.) [Markow]

10. When navigating, screen randomly becomes unresponsive, however does correctly wake up/sleep/shoe map. [Rudgas]

11. My device has triggered the emergency alert twice now without reason. First time was at the end of a steep MTB single trail and I thought I was maybe going fast and then braking until coming to a complete halt too suddenly - anyways, when riding the same trail a 2nd time (on another day), I went really really slow on purpose. I came to a complete halt and after maybe 20 seconds, it triggered the alarm AGAIN. At the exact same GPS location. I will keep observing this the next time ... would be interesting how the device detects an "emergency" at all. Stupid thing was, on the 2nd occurrence of the alarm, it didn't let me cancel it (screen was frozen) and the only reason no message was sent to my contact was because i had no cell coverage at the time :S [Veronika]

12. My Edge Explore has a real problem with addresses/saved locations. I've saved several places I visit often - work, home, friends' houses, new favourite pizza restaurant - and after either syncing or being switched off, it loses them every time.
They [Garmin support] had me download my Garmin folder from the device and send it over to them. Having looked at it, they identified it as a known issue which is already being worked on. They don't have an expected date for it to be solved. [mouserat]

13. Mapping function breaks after several days of continuous riding and recording. I observed this twice, each after about 5 days and ~15h of recordings. The observed effects are that the map is taking more and more time to load, requiring several seconds to load and reorient when waking the screen up. Scrolling is also extremely slow and nearly unusable as sometimes the map jumps back to the starting point.
This can be resolved by a reset of the device (setiings etc. reset is enough), or oddly enough, travelling quickly about 300km without recording. [Rudgas]

14. Bluetooth connection problems [multiple reported instances]

My Edge Explore has a real problem with addresses/saved locations. I've saved several places I visit often - work, home, friends' houses, new favourite pizza restaurant - and after either syncing or being switched off, it loses them every time.

In addition, it cannot find certain streets/postcodes. It won't let me finish entering my work postcode, which is N1 in London - I get halfway through then it jumps to "N1 2, Surrey" and there seems to be no way to get around it. Same if I try entering it by the street name. It's not a new street, new development or new postcode, and when I browse to it on the map it's clearly marked with the correct street name, but it can't find it through the search function. This would be less of a problem if it would remember the location when saved as "work", but it won't.

I've downloaded the latest update via Garmin Express, still doesn't work.

Is this fixable or should I return it for a new one?

    -------

UPDATE - Garmin support suggested a fix which needed a Windows computer. I don't have access to one so they suggested restoring the system to default, which didn't work. They looked into it closer and told me the inability to find the postcode was a mapping issue and gave me a link to report that, which I have done.

The bigger problem is the repeated losing of saved locations. They had me download my Garmin folder from the device and send it over to them. Having looked at it, they identified it as a known issue which is already being worked on. They don't have an expected date for it to be solved.
  • I really didn't want to spend a lot of time reporting bugs during my holiday, buuuut today The explore Map function broke...

On wake-up the device takes 6 seconds or more to move the blue arrow, load the new map tiles, reorient the map upwards. Before this took approximately 1 second. Now it os really slow, sometimes takes even as long as it takes for the sleep countdown to start.
Besides the whole map is broken too. Zooming in or out takes several seconds for each step while the map is unresponsive. As where before it was near instant. Panning the map sometimes fails completely, resetting the position or takes very for loading.

And the fun part? This also happens with all maps disabled.. the malfunction can still be seen through the lagging of the blue arrow and sticking buttons (plus minus etc.)

I am extremely disappointed that such an unreliable device was released. I hope I can find a way to repair this, as I have still about 10 days of cycling left with a device that is nearly useless for navigation.
  • It's not fun at all, but sometimes a full reset to factory settings will help...

And check always that only one routable map is currently active. In case of the Garmin Cycle Map (EU in my case) 'The map' consists of 4 maps:
    - Garmin Cycle Map EU, North East
    - Garmin Cycle Map EU, South West
    - Garmin Geocode Map EU
    - Garmin DEM Map EU

PS. In any situation with one routable map like the OpenFietsMap or mapset like the Garmin Cycle Map you better can have the INTL Standard Basemap, NR enabled too.
  • It worked!! The 'mild' reset actually did it. And I didn't even loose any data which was a huge relieve.

All settings and heart rate zones were lost though. Now to see if the same problem will start again after a few days of continuous riding.
  • I have not been able to get my device to connect to either my iPhone or my friend's Samsung Galaxy 8. Has anyone else ever experienced this? Working with Garmin tech support, but still.....a key feature of my device is nonfunctional at the moment.
  • Bug tracker updated.

cdlinden I don't have a Samsung but had to try several times to get it to work (redmi 4x).

    Bugs:

    ..........
    5. Route recalculation on imported routes from the app (not tried on other imported routes) that contains turn-by-turn will reroute to the point where the route was left rather than the nearest point of the route. [Rudgas]
    .......

5.1 Navigating a Course (from imported track) with settings:
    - Course Guidance ON
    - Off Course Warnings ON
    - Recalculation turned OFF

Observation: When 'Off Course' some kind of "Off Course Recalculation" takes place while Recalculation is switched Off (nice and usable), but implementation is poor because proposed re-routing is to the point where you left the original course (useless).

When you go off-course you get a warning as expected. The Edge Explore is very friendly by during a short time / distance suggesting a short route to return to your Course (track), shown by the well known white arrows and mostly presented as a U-turn, while the turning point moves along over the road where you are currently riding on and sometimes as a newly calculated broad magenta course line. In both cases however this nice service tries you to get back to the point where you left the original course. I like this functionallity realy as a positive one, but has to be revamped in such a way that you can get back on course at the first logical occasion ahead, depending on the available roads. It surprised me that a kind of recalculation takes place while in the menu Recalculation is turned off. However, the Edge Explore tries this 'Off Course recalculation" only for a short distance (time?) and therefore it could have been a very nice extra service if it was implemented better. So... nice function, but has to be improved.

  • I'm sorry to say that I have to abandon the Edge Explore for now. At the current price-point and the gravity of some of the bugs (most notably map-slowdown and sharp bend warning) The value of the overall device is really low for me. I hope for all owners that all the major bugs get fixed soon and at least some of the suggested features get taken up by garmin.

If someone is willing to continue the feature/bug collection for the community, feel free to copy-paste this list and open up a new thread/closing this.

To the EXACT point where you leave the course. I made a slight detour for a sandwich at a 5 lane intersection to the right, I was originally going northbound. When I returned to the course along the same road, but now in the right most turning lane, the Edge instructed me to turn left at the intersection and ride the width of the 5 lanes before making a U turn and then going northbound. Being 5 lanes (40m??) to the north of the point I departed the course was too much according to the logic. I will note that as soon as I made a RIGHT turn - it recognized I was back on course.
  • Yes, good to see that someone else finds this really disturbing - This is really confusing when you have to leave the route because of some circumstances and you know or see, where the original route continues, but the Edge Explore sends you in the opposite direction after recalculate the route! If you don't know, that the Explore tries to send you to the exact point, where you leave the route, this could be really a nightmare...

Many, many little things, which are not clear or not be in the manual and are way different to the behavior of other navis! I'm using a zumo 59x lm on my motorbike and there are many differences in routing behavior between those two units, which i wasn't aware - greatest difference between them where the one above and track routing on the Explore vs routing on the zumo...
