I found a way to start my Edge 850 with 32.20 relatively reliably. If I hold the brightness sensor in direct sunlight while booting, it works after two or three attempts.

Hi,

Since updating my new Edge 850 to firmware 32.20, the screen briefly goes black every 6–7 seconds during an activity and then immediately comes back. The device worked perfectly during my first two rides before the 32.20 update.

Has anyone else experienced this issue after updating to 32.20?

Looks like Garmin has officially kicked you out of the 30.18 Club! 😂 Glad 32.20 is working perfectly for you though. I think I’ll keep my hands in my pockets a little longer!

A strange thing has happend this weekend. I was in a different area of our country for several ride. In the hotel with a different wifi connecties my 850 suddenly started to update to 32.20. Unit was with 30.18. I could not force it to stop.

what was the final result. The 850 works perfect no blinking no crashes or problems with start up. So weird. Anyway still my suggestion is to stay away from 32.20 till Garmin has solved the problem.

Cuando configure las zonas de frecuencia cardiaca por % de umbral de lactato. Siendo el mia 143 ppm En la zona 1 pone <81%. Y me arroja valores de 114 a 115 ppm. No toma todos los pulsos para abajo como zona 1 si voy a 113 pulsos ya salta a zona 0.9

I've been riding with the Edge 850 and segment tracking is the feature that disappoints me most. There are three problems:

Nested segments aren't tracked. When a segment starts inside another segment, the Edge ignores it. Strava times both after upload, so the data clearly supports it. The Edge just won't show them live. Many popular climbs have a shorter, steeper segment inside a longer one, and those are exactly the efforts riders want to pace.
Segments start late. Even with multi-band GNSS on, starts are often detected seconds after I've crossed the line, which makes live pacing unreliable right when it matters.
There's no way to choose a segment manually mid-ride. I can't pick a segment and say "track this one now." If the automatic detection gets it wrong or chooses the wrong overlapping segment, I have no control.

What I'm asking for:

Tracking of multiple overlapping segments at once, even if only one is shown on screen with the option to switch
Faster, more reliable start detection
A way to manually select or prioritize a segment during a ride

This is a premium device and competing head units handle segments more flexibly. I'd love to see this addressed in a firmware update. If other riders run into the same thing, please add your voice so Garmin can see how widespread this is.

what the OP wants is the multiple segments handling, that is not possible (none of any device can handle that). You need to put it into disabled status for the long segment ("live feedback" and toggle switch off) and the short segment will pop up then. the live segment's quality is depending on the original segment's track quality (who made it), if that is inaccurate, coming from a mobile's track or any inaccurate recording device, then everybody's live segments will be inaccurate (and the time ahead/behind value will fluctuate too), what was the original , 1s or smart recording, and this is the question at the opponent too. if you wanna make a pinpoint accurate segment, then make an own private segment for that section (with your multi-multi gnss setting and 1s recording) and after that race against your PB or similar.

but if you share a strava segment link (or tell me what is the exact name of this segment), i can tell you what is wrong with the original segment (which is starting late as you described). my experience is if the original segment is accurate, it is starting always exactly at the same spot.

100% - this drives me nuts when I ride a local loop that has 2 segments that start the same place. Of course I don’t want to continually star or unload segments, the on-device detection should give that option. At minimal it should be smart enough that then, halfway, I deviate from the one-it-thinks-I’m-intending to the other it should adapt. ClimbPro does; it recalculates hills when you go up something it hadn’t anticipated.

This has been asked for many times but someone is obviously working on Strava code now because the betas currently have ‘recent best” and other wolf/carrot elements integrated. And hopefully market pressures from other vendors doing it well have woken the sleeping giant.

No doubt someone from Garmin will say “add it to the wishlist”… but that’s just a way of closing down the conversation. The wishlist is a black hole - what is required is a “user voice” type interface where you get to vote on similar issues; then what’s really important to the consumer bubbles to the top. It’s open and engaging… maybe I should write and suggest it on the wishlist 😂

The more important point is that managers and engineers should also ride bikes in the real world (at least occasionally) - if decision makers were consumers as well they would understand these issues and they wouldn’t take years to resolve because the case would be clear. Dogfooding. Do it.

Hi Folks !

The information I received from Garmin Poland is that the problem is known and will be resolved in the next software update. When? No one knows. At the moment, you can sign up ( on garmin connect website ) for the 33.05 beta software and take a chance that it might resolve the problem.

BTW - I noticed that sometimes Edge turns on without screen flickering. It happens when the device is turned on and charging at the same time. Then the key is to leave it in sleep mode instead of turning it off. Once Edge is turned off the screen starts flickering again.

If anyone is interested in this solution, I can go through the steps and check exactly what I’m doing. Just let me know.

I had a issue to the one in this video, but the fix was simple. I completely turned off my Edge after my ride. It fully charged while turned off. A couple of days later, I turned it back on before my next ride, and everything was fine. (battery saver was already off, as I never use it)

Indeed this is bull... This characteristic is not present in all Edge 850 models. My 850 works fine with 32.20 and with the latest version of TopoActive Europe.

This honestly sounds like Garmin is answering about a completely different issue. My original Edge 850 was blinking during normal use, and eventually the screen would stay on for only a few seconds after startup. Garmin replaced it. My replacement on 30.18 works perfectly. So this is definitely not just something that happens when the device is off the mount.

So frustrating. I finale got an answer from Garmin, which clearly. Shows that they are not reading the forum, wherry is clearly States, that the blinking is at all times not only when the 850 is in your hand or desk. Here the answer from Garmin which is in my opinion bull….

On September 10, we were informed that the issue cannot be reproduced while cycling, but only when the device is off the mount—and even then, only if you make a deliberate effort to replicate it.
This characteristic is present in all Edge 850 models; therefore, we cannot offer a replacement. Furthermore, since the issue does not occur during actual cycling, there will be no changes to the Edge 850 design.

Connect IQ data fields vanish

This issue appeared after the last software update SW 32.20. Here's what I did: before my ride, I made sure the Connect IQ data fields were working properly, but in the middle of the ride they didn't display anything and got stuck on the IQ icon, as you can see in the attached images. This has happened on my last few rides. Interestingly, on some rides I noticed that certain information had vanished, but as soon as I started a Strava segment, the data fields reappeared. This is annoying since I use several Connect IQ data fields as my main screens.

Edge 850 won't connect to Wi-Fi anymore

After coming back from a ride, my Edge 850 said it couldn't connect to Wi-Fi.

I removed the network and re-added it via the Connect app, but it simply wouldn't connect. I then tried adding it through the Garmin express app, but it still won't connect.

I decided to reset the device and went through the setup process again. I finally managed to connect it to my Wi-Fi (test connection said it connected successfully)

The following day, it stopped connecting to Wi-Fi again!

I have a dedicated IoT network for 2.4Ghz devices, it won't connect to that either. I've tried via the device, via the Connect app, and the Garmin express app, still the same result.

I'm absolutely fed up of the 850 now.

How can a device of this expense behave so poorly with Wi-Fi networks?

I have exceptionally cheap Wi-Fi devices that don't suffer with these issues; it's simply not acceptable.

After my last post here, I contacted Garmin support with a thoroughly detailed email about my issue. They got back to me with a large list of things I had to do.

Uploading photo's, videos, data from the device, Wi-Fi information; absolutely loads of stuff!

I have had about 4 emails back since then, and every single one of them is asking me for a specific bit of information.

However, they asked me for this information in the very first email they sent me. I gave them ALL of it, and they keep asking for the same bits of information in emails every few weeks.

2 months of this and I have gotten absolutely no where.

One of the worst experiences I have had in a long time.

For me the same . No updates till the problem is fixed.

futher I’m still waiting on a reply from Garmin but no reaction at all, whiteboards the have said a reply will come 2 weeks ago. So frustrating and not customer friendly

Is it a brand new or an old device? Most users who had the issue wrote that their device was brand new. So it could be a combination of the latest hardware revision and the 32.20 software.

I have a garmin 850 running 32..20 and mine has been good not problems.
