Hydration alert change with 31.29

With 31.29 it seems the hydration alert has changed. Anyone else noticed this?

Before it was a nice pop up from the bottom to remind me to drink, now it pops up and takes up most of the screen with a "time to fuel" pop up that has hydration on the left and an apple picture on the right! :/

I originally thought it was a setting that changed with the update but all the settings are the same, it is only the "smart hydration" alert that I have turned on.

Garmin why do this?!

I have a Garmin Edge 850 and I’ve disabled all eat and drink alerts, but I still keep getting a notification during a navigation ride. Can someone tell me how to turn this off? I’ve attached an image of the alert that appears during the ride.

How to beep on reroute and not on sharp turns?

Hi! New 850 user, first post here. Although I briefly had 130 in the past (returned), 520-ish (returned) and 840 (returned immediately). Also a heavy FR 955 user and GPSMap64.

I'm playing with the screen and alerts. I set re-route to "prompt" because I don't want it to reroute silently. It pops up on the screen but makes no sound. Is there any way to make it beep?

At the same time, it appears to be no way to disable the 3 beeps, then 1 beep before a turn. At least for routes calculated on the device. Obviously, the sharp turn alert is disabled. Also, I believe the routes synced via Connect will always bother with turns, too. I know there is a separate setting for it in courses and I have it disabled. Same on FR 955. But at least there I can sync via Explore, which does not insert turns. (now I remember why I returned 840 immediately - no Explore support).

I mountain bike and there are sharp turns everywhere. Guess if the beeps cannot be disabled, at least I can reduce the volume. And yeah, appears to be no sound or any popup on the route completion, really?

Obviously, on the latest firmware. Thx.

Updates through WiFi impossible

Updating through WiFi doesn't work for me.

Summary

Searching for updates through WiFi is only possible if the initial sync after boot succeeded, which is often not the case.
The update itself always fails.
It is not possible to actually turn the WiFi off and on again. It keeps on.
As suspend of the device can break WiFi connectivity. Requiring a turning the device off and on again.
API endpoints probably slow.

Description
Updates on my Edge 850 always fail. I was only able to install 29.22 with Garmin Express through macOS. Now the current release as of 2026-02-20 is 30.18 and I tried to update for hours. When I use the built-in update functionality of the Edge 850 through

System -> About -> Check for Updates

it always fails. The Edge connects to WiFi and says “Checking for Updates” for around five minutes. Then it either responds with “Transfer Failed”, "Download check failed...", “Checking for Updates” infinitely or the Edge turns the display off (i.e. suspends) because I missed touching it repeatedly. While writing these lines, I discovered a new message "Some Updates Could Not Be Downloaded".

But being able to check for updates requires a precondition.
Every time the Edge 850 boots up, it will automatically connect to the WiFi (fine) and try to sync (fine) which can succeed within 30 to 60 seconds (good), or it fails and gets stuck forever (bad).

When it gets stuck and I don't touch the display repeatedly, the Edge suspends after five minutes. When it resumes, it either manages to connect back to WiFi (now we are back in the previous situation, maybe the sync succeeds) or the WiFi is not working anymore at all (very bad). Why is the initial sync after boot important? Because as long as the Edge 850 tries to sync, the search for updates isn't allowed “Transfer already in progress”. And there is no way to prevent that; it doesn't help to turn the WiFi off and on. The status bar shows that the WiFi actually is never switched off and disconnected.

Regressions from 530 to 850:

The Edge 530 syncs much faster, usually within 30 seconds. The Edge 850 gets stuck very often during sync.
The Edge 850 fails to download the current update.
Turning the WiFi off under Connected Featuers -> WiFi doesn't turn the WiFi off.
The Edge 850 suspends when connected to external power during sync, searching for updates, and downloading map updates.
The Edge 850 often fails to re-connect WiFi after suspend and resume (see above).
The Edge 850 blocks the search for updates once a sync is “Transfer in Progress”.

Questions:

Are the API endpoints used by the 50 series slower than the endpoints of the 30 series? My location is Germany. The Edge 530 operates fine in the same WiFi. Provider is Deutsche Telekom (DTAG), native IPv4 and IPv6.
Why the update check doesn't simply check for a version number (gather info) and then download the update (showing a progress bar)?

I'm afraid the WiFi connectivity of the Edge 50 series needs a thorough inspection.

My primary computer is using Linux and provides full USB-MTP support. I've access to a MacBook and maybe it will succeed to install this update again through Garmin Express but the USB-MTP support of macOS is limited, I will lose the opportunity to debug this, and I'm not eager to use macOS.

Garmin support sent me a replacement device, months ago. Thank you, the support was interested and tried to help. But no actual improvement.

But now 31.29 released. I had to install 31.29 again through the MacBook, the update via WiFi failed. The second last change is important:

Fixed slow syncing over wifi.

The Edge 850 now syncs reliable after startup via WiFi. And as fast as my old 530!

Furthermore is is now able to sync after a ride via WiFi, it is enough that I'm near my WiFi. As my old 530 did.

It is also rather quick in determining that no update are available (reaching that point was previously nearly impossible, it failed usually). As next I will try to update to 31.30 via WiFi. I will report again.

Garmin finally fixed some issues :)

then try to: delete the sensor pairings, plug the Edge into computer, delete the garmindevices.xml and device.fit from the Edge, turn it off completely, turn it on, and re-pair. i had similiar problem in the past once but it solved with this "trick".

Since the new update, i'm constantly seeing this *** pop up at the worst times, and stays until i dismiss it. Assioma pedals and Hammerhead HRM, but the number is always different and doesn't correspond to any device I have.

Must've happened 30+ times over the past 200km in the past two days.

I posted the same problem in the Edge 1050 Subgroup. I removed all possible sensors and re-paired. No change and good luck.

Edge shows overall gear change count but no time in gear.
Garmin Connect does show proper no. of sprockets and chainring (ie 34x51), but only zeros in time and percentage.
Garmin Connect app on Android crashes when I try to view shifting data. Reinstalled app with the same results.

Im using Deore XT Di2 shifter SW-M8250-R 12-speed and Deore XT Di2 rear derailleur RD-M8250-SGS. In Shimano Etube Project app on my mobile phone I can see shifting history. Everything including Edge is using latest firmware.

Stop function on Map View

Who thought it was a good idea to put a stop function on Map View. So if you tap the screen instead of swiping to get to another screen the activity is stopped. This is entirely possible if cycling off road. At this point there is no notification that the activity has stopped and the only options are to Save or a ‘return to where you were’ Arrow. However if you choose the latter you have just lost your activity for good. Brilliant.

Hi my edge 850 nav in FRANCE making a weird calculations and showing me ''complicated'' itinerary talked to garmin they saying ALL fine

1 800 meters from my home being on the same main road '' big main avenue'' ' long straight -> garmin showing me tourning right / left getting away from main avenue going by side roads coming back to main avenue etc. = instead show 800 meters straight forward road home edge adding distance and turns for nothing...

2 Tried few times go point A to point B by the main straight road -> then asking garmin to navigate HOME = always taking me of main road (often pointing on even closed roads maps are not up to date at all in Paris! ) He never show a way back to point A by main road taken to go to point B !

3 Routing set to ''Road Cycling'' garmin shows to take small paths for pedestrians walker & runners !
*Tried with all different routing setup = result is alays the same!

4 Constantly showing me to take forbidden turns or blocked streets! MAPS in Paris and in the region ARE NOT AT ALL UP TO DATE !

* it's my 10 th garmin device the experiences are worst ever! Garmin getting more and more disappointing, more expensive and worst ever!

Update: I managed to find an option to turn it off on Edge device when reviewing synced course from Connect to the device.
I wasn't aware there is another screen below "Ride" button at the bottom when screen is pulled up. There is an option: Navigation / Courses / <select specific from a list> / <pull screen content up> / Nutrition/Hydration / Plan enabled (ON/OFF)

The annoying part of smart nutrition alerts, is that it isn't very smart - it often pops up in the middle of short climbs. Surely it should be smart enough to wait until ClimbPro has been completed. For long climbs it could wait for a flat section.

see Unified Training status not working

i've been chasing garmin support for 7 months over this. basically they have acknowledged that the unified training status that should enable use of multiple devices does not work with the 850 but fixing it seems to be very low priority for them which is disapointing givne that it is a key garmin feature.

suggest you take it up with garmin support too in order to increase priority for a fix.

your low recovery time specifically is probably caused by incorrectly set HR zones - they should generally be shared across devices but something might have gone haywire there, the way the settings are done is a bit odd.

Hi, until now I’ve been using Garmin Coach via my watch, and after intervals or tempo runs, it always showed a 40-hour recovery period, which made sense given how tired I felt…

For the past few days, I’ve been using an Edge and streaming my heart rate from the watch to it (everything displays correctly while riding).

After a workout, however, it shows a 2-hour recovery time, and Garmin Coach goes haywire, telling me day after day to do intervals, tempo runs, and VO2 max workouts because it doesn’t see that I’m tired and have an overloaded training schedule…

Best I can figure the latest update has reduced the sidebar vehicle threat indicators to basic white oblong objects without the orange/red triangle overlay that was previously displayed. I've rebooted the 850 and repaired the 820 (BLE). Anyone else seeing this?

Garmin has finally seen reason and appears to have responded to complaints from users of the x30 models. It is now possible to disable the virtual partner on the Edge x40 and x50 devices. Unfortunately, this isn't documented in the user manual. I found out about it in a YouTube video.

I contacted Garmin support and this new behavior is by design. I guess the orange overlays are not considered useful. But the red high-risk threat overlay is preserved. This is critical and was initially not apparent to me. I am satisfied.

I previously used emojis on my saved courses, but after the recent update they just show up as question marks ('?'). Do you plan to restore this feature? Thank you.
