The change will only show for climbs that are long enough that they don't fit on the screen and get shown in sections as you move up the climb.

For me that is around 2.8 to 3.0 Km for Free climbing

Hi everyone,

I recently purchased the new Edge 850. While I am really enjoying the device overall, I would like to report a consistent issue regarding the ClimbPro feature when riding in Free Ride mode.

The problem is that the real-time gradient and the ClimbPro elevation profile do not accurately match the actual road conditions, showing a noticeable lag or mapping misalignment.

Example of the issue: While I am physically still riding on a steep section of a climb, the ClimbPro graph and my current position marker already show that I have reached a flatter section (indicated by the green color on the profile). It feels like the device's estimated position on the DEM map is ahead of my actual position, providing incorrect real-time gradient feedback.

This inaccuracy defeats the purpose of the feature, as it makes it difficult to pace efforts correctly on unfamiliar climbs.

Device: Garmin Edge 850
Firmware Version: 31.28

Please note: I have consistently experienced this issue across all previous software versions as well, so it does not appear to be a new bug introduced in the latest update.

Has anyone else noticed this specific behavior during free rides? I hope the Garmin engineering team can look into this and improve the DEM map alignment or the GPS lag in a future update.

Thanks for the suggestions, but I've had beta version 32.12 installed for a few days now and the issue is still the same, nothing has changed with climpro

Take a look at the the current beta 32.12 if you want an immediate fix or wait until this becomes a public release.

The ClimbPro position was fixed in 32.10

I have the same problem just as described -- it seems to show your position on the climb ahead of where you actually are. Interestingly, the distance remaining field appears to be exactly right. It makes no difference whether you are free riding or following a route, the problem is the same.

Once I succeeded to install version 31.33 the problem of stucking on "loading" screen disappeared.

Hello, I have a new Garmin edge 850 which is stuck on the ‘loading new courses, workouts..’ screen. I’ve tried both the soft and hard reset but nothing works. It also isn’t being picked up by Garmin express when connected by usb to my computer. Please help as the device is currently useless and failed on me on a 550k ride, which defeats the purpose of buying it

I downloaded update via wifi, it takes short time, max 1 min.

Lucky you. Still struggling with this issue, stil 6.16

It starts downloading the update and fails after 10-20 minut somewhere in the middle.

How did you downloaded the update file, via wi-fi or Bluetooth?

Same issue to me today. I did all steps from 'Garmin - KS' post and I was able to update to 31.33 version from 6.16 and that was helped for my Edge 850.

The same issue. Bought the new Edge 850 a week ago. Today connected to "Garmin Express" updated one of the proposed maps and it was stucked on the "loading new courses, workouts". Did not succeeded to to update to the 31.XX version. Current version 6.16. Once succeded to get out of the "loading" screen and ge to the About and check for updates it is stuck ob "transfer already in progress" for 3 hours... Do not know what to do

That's interesting to compare your experience to mine - I guess it depends on the nature of the riding you do, number of sensors, mix of outdoor/indoor, strong GPS signal versus weak, bright sun versus overcast, etc, as well as expectations around how often you should charge your electronics.

For my week of riding this week, I haven't charged the 850 at all (I charged Sunday afternoon). Since then I've ridden every day except for Wednesday, about 7 hours elapsed so far. However 5 hours of that was indoor riding without the GPS and obviously indoor lighting rather than direct sun. Outdoors was in the early morning so again, not bright conditions. However, regardless, I'm still sitting at around 80% charge now.

I have no problem with putting the device on the charger after every ride, but I don't do that as it's not needed in my case. My lights, on the other hand, do need to be charged every ride - I get maybe 4 hours out of my front, and max of 7 hours on the rear varia radar. Give I'm charging up those devices every outdoor ride, it's no extra hassle to do that with the Edge as well if I needed to. I've never had the Edge run out of juice mid-ride, but I have had it happen several times with the Varia.

In short, for me the reduced battery life is a very minor issue that doesn't negate the clear improvements over my old 830 that it replaced.

Upgrade from 840 decision

I'm currently using the Garmin 840 and thinking about upgrading to the 850. Has anyone made the move from the 840 and regret it? The online reviews all state the battery doesn't last as long so is the display and UI that much better to make it a good move to the newer device?

I've taken the plunge and returned my 850 today as the reduction in battery life was too much of a compromise for myself. I would only get circa 2 or 3 rides on the battery at most and it even switched off mid ride last weekend. Going back to my 840, hopefully the issue will be resolved by the 860?

For what it's worth, the improvements made over the 840 was all welcomed, screen clarity etc were all brilliant. Shame the battery was not up to par.

I think the correct decision is Garmin should push the "freeze on boot" fix soonest on public SW instead of asking us to install a beta SW

Hello everyone! I wanted to provide an update on this concern. A fix for a potential freeze during startup ("Fix potential freeze on boot") is included in Beta Software Version 31.12. If your Edge 850 is currently stuck on the Loading Courses screen and you'd like to install the Beta software, please follow these steps:

Perform a master reset:
- Press and hold the Power, Lap/Reset, and Start/Stop buttons simultaneously.
- Continue holding all three buttons until the unit reboots twice.
- After the second reboot, release the Power button while continuing to hold the Start/Stop and Lap/Reset buttons.
- Once the Garmin logo disappears, release the remaining buttons.
Enroll in the Garmin Beta Software program by following the instructions here: Enrolling in and Learning About Garmin Beta Software Program
After enrolled, setup your Edge > Skip Phone, Activity Profile, and Sensor Setup.
Once at the main menu, pair with the Garmin Connect app and DO NOT restore from backup or transfer sensors during setup.
From the Edge, navigate to Menu > System > About > Check for Updates to get 32.12 installed.
You should no longer experience this issue.

If you prefer not to enroll in the Beta Software Program, the fix will be included in a future public software update. We appreciate everyone's patience while that update is being made available!

just another update from me to say that i have still had no progress whatsoever from garmin support on this other than ackowledging that unified training status does not work properly.

in fact, i have had new symptoms. recently my acute training load metric has jumped up and down expressly in reverse to the actual load garmin has recorded. also, my training plan has repeatedly reset back to week 1, going from build phase back to base and hence beign completely wrong.

a number of similar issues recorded in these forums, nobody seems to be getting any support yet garmin keep advertising this feature

Unified Training status not working

I bought an 850 last week for my bike at a holiday home. I use a 1040 on my usual bike and a forerunner 965 as my primary wearable. I used the 850 on two rides on subsequent days this week on mountainous roads. All the ride details uploaded to Garmin connect. But the secondary impacts , such as Vo2 max changes, FTP changes , recovery times , impact on battery battery, sleep coach didn’t. For instance after the two rides , my recovery time on the 850 was 47hours but Garmin connect and the 965 showed nil.Sadly, my Vo2 went down on the 850 but Garmin connect and my 965 still show the higher number. Any thoughts? . None of this is an issue with my 1040. Every bit of information has been consistent

Yes, it is 6.16. However, there is no option to update it anywhere! If I try to do it through the device it says there is no update available. I can't do it through Connect Express either, there is no update available either! Where can I find the updated firmware then?

For both SW31.31 and SW31.33, its inevitable to encounter the dreaded Stuck Screen when powering up the device after a full data and settings reset.

SW31.XX is by far the worse firmware for Edge 850.

What software build is the Edge on?

If you are 6.16 then this is a known issue and requires you to update the device to 31.33.

There should be post from Customer Support on this forum on how to do that.

I'm facing the same issue, I've just bought this device and downloaded the South America map through Garmin Express. After that, every time I try to turn the Edge on, it gets stuck on the loading screen. I have already done the soft and hard reset, which works, but then the next time I turn it on, it gets stuck again. In short, I've been resetting this device since I downloaded the South America map. Is there any solution (I even left it loading an entire night to check if the issue was the 7.2 GB map size). Any thoughts?
