ERG malfunction on garmin edge 840

I am using a Garmin Edge 840 with an Elite Direto XR.

The trainer is paired correctly as an ANT+ FE-C device (Fitness Equipment Control – trainer control protocol) and manual control works fine (I can set target power or resistance from the Edge).

However, during structured workouts (both created directly on the Edge and imported from TrainerDay), ERG mode stops working after some time (around 10 sec).
The trainer switches to resistance mode and power is no longer controlled, it’s extremely hard not possible to ride.

Important observation:
If I open TrainerDay (even paused), ERG control immediately works correctly again.

This suggests that the Edge 840 loses FE-C control (trainer control) during the workout.

Has anyone experienced similar behavior or found a workaround?

  • It doesn't sound like it in your case, but is it possible some other app is also connected to the trainer and conflicting with the Edge?

  • if you have a Direto and TrainerDay app, why do you wanna control your workout via Edge? control it via the app with BT and just record the Direto's power as power sensor in the Edge (and disable the indoor trainer pairing) . the quality of the FE-C controlling was always hectic. (in your case it is a conflict between FE-C and FTMS i think but for the future i suggest to use the app for training. i never used my Garmins for ERG controlling in the past 11 years, i let it for computer or tablet , via ANT+ or BT, depending what was my goal with it.)

  • Had exact problem and removing all of the the trainer sensors from the Edge and pairing again resolved the issue, but it still lags with the power adjustment. I ended up controlling the trainer with TrainerRoad app.

Maybe just use the Edge as a recording device and let the app control the ERG.
