The battery on edge 820 wont last more then 50miles. Can I get it replace?

I like the edge 820 works, no problems  other then the battery issue. I just want the battery replace.

  • AFAIK, the two options are to do it yourself, or contact Garmin to exchange it for a refurbished unit for very roughly $75.  Best to give Garmin support a call and ask what the options are.  Google "Edge 820 battery replacement"  to see what's involved in doing it yourself.  It's a bit involved.

  • Probably it is not the battery capacity itself, but an error of the battery capacity indicator which needs recalibration.
    The error
may be introduced as a side effect with a software update. The latest is version 12.70, but I don't know this
    one is the culprit.

At the moment I'm busy resetting the battery capacity indicator of an Edge 820 of a friend of mine. Exactly the same
    issue -
after 3 hours cycling the battery indicates empty and asks for going into battery save mode.
On a Dutch forum a reset procedure came up from a Garmin specialist store in the Netherlands and gave it a try:

We have now been able to solve it for several customers by resetting the device after it
    was completely
    empty.
Make sure your device is completely empty, so really until it fails.
Then connect to the charger and simultaneously press and hold the start / stop and lap
button (the 2 onthe front). You will then see the Garmin logo and then a blank screen.
When you see the blank screen, you can release the 2 buttons. The device is then reset and knows the 'zero' point of the battery. You have to set it back to your preferred language, etc. Then really leave it on the charger for about 6 hours until the battery is 100% full.
After the procedure the battery lasted 5.5 hours until shutdown (software version 12.70). A better result, but far not as
    it should be from specs.
After reading on it came up that going back to an older software version - 11.20 was mentioned - the battery usage and
indicator could improve (much) more. I took the plunge with software version 11.20 and after the first charge to 100% a full
discharge took 7.75 hours. Now going to repeat the reset procedure described above. Looks promising, but you'll have to
accept having to run an old version of the software! I'll tell the results here.

Work to do for Garmin to redress the battery indicator malfunction - PLEASE :)

    Edit 2021-04-27
After the reset procedure with software version 11.20 and one full charge / discharge cycle the 820 now alerts for battery
save mode after 6 hours (10% battery remaining) and shuts down after 7 hours due to an empty battery.
Note that this was with very light test conditions: screen backlight 20% (day / permanent on), two sensors (speed &
cadence) connected, no connections with WiFi, no Bluetooth, GPS fix (no Glonass or Galileo), ambient temperature 22
    degrees centigrade.
  • i also like the 820 size but the battery only lasts 5 to 6 hours. it was either buy an 830 or try one of those chinese batteries which supposedly have 1450 mah, then i bought a small duracell powerbank battery which has a capacity of 3350mah. i strapped that onto the stem & coupled them up via the short garmin external battery lead. works spot on if you want to use it all day.

  • My Edge 820 even new did not last more than 6-7 hours with power saving enabled.

I wonder from where the producer get out 15 hours as advertised.

  • Hi again. Today I ride a 33km track. 5 sensors connected. HR, speed, cadence, Varia front and back. Power saving on. I start at 100% and after 1h30min the battery was 70%.

  • The battery drains heavily when viewing the map.

If not use maps, new battery lasts ~8h, Power savings not help too much.

    Use powerbank, for example https://www.gearbest.com/chargers/pp_493559.html
