820 stuck loading maps after 12.10 update

I've just upgraded to the 12.10 edge 820 release, it appeared to install successful but after rebooting it can not get past the loading maps screen, what looks like a couple of horizontal pulsing dots in the background. I have the full Garmin UK maps as well as full UK OSM via a supp .img file, there's 4GB of available space.

I tried soft then hard resets with no luck, in the end i've mounted the unit as storage by holding down the lap button whilst connected to my computer, I'm in the slow process of reinstalling the Garmin map via express to see if that will help.

Hi, I deleted old backup img. files to free storage. then I've got 14 gb free and the it loaded the fast as normal

Which files are these and where are the located?

Files like D6017020B.img, gmapdem.img, gmapgc.img, gmapprom.img Those files are backup from previous update and they are large, like 3GB. They are place in the Garmin folder. Connect your device to usb on your pc and get into Mass Storage mode. Then your are able to se the .img files.

OK. I've certainly seen those files but didn't know they were superfluous and could be deleted. All of those files on my 820 are either 1kb or 3kb except for the gmapdem.img which is 6.9 gb.

Are they indeed unneeded, or is the idea to delete these old files prior to the update and they will be restored by the update? If that's the case, I think one could delete all the files (not folders) in the Garmin folder. You could delete the folders too, but will lose all settings and personal data, unless you back them up first.

My device is now completely screwed at this stage and Garmin are replacing it under warranty as nothing they can do will stop it trying to load maps = unusable device. Great!

What is the issue? They won't successfully load? They take too long to load? You don't want them loaded?

This worked for me (running English version). I also had/have a custom loading message. It took a little while after hitting back, but after like 5 seconds it went to the main screen. Rebooted afterwards and all is behaving as it should.
