820 or 1000

Hello ,
am unable to make a decision to buy the newer 820 or the older 1000 , if i bought the garmin 1000 then a new device came out that would be a loss .. but again how important is a big screen and how difficult to follow the 820 map because of the map size

thanks in advance
  • I've been using the 820 for a while now and cannot recommend it.
    1. The touchscreen is really bad. Swipe left and sometimes it swipes right. Swipe right and sometimes the top menu pulls down. Total junk.
    2. The internal processor is very slow, which probably leads to the poor touchscreen performance.
    3. If you use LiveTrack, Navigation and a Varia rear light: expect ultra slow performance/crashes.
    4. Navigation randomly stops
    5. Strava segments are nearly useless, I turned them off. Wahoo is WAY better at this.

If you don't have any other Garmin stuff, buy a Wahoo ELEMNT Bolt.
If you do have Garmin stuff and require NAV - Edge 1000
If you do have Garmin stuff and don't require NAV - Edge 520
  • I have to agree with BrentM. about the 820 and the alternatives. Sold it a month ago after one year. At least it didn't crash as my 810 did on every ride using OSM Maps. But it just doesn't work well enough for the price tag (Screen/slow processor/software). I was also disappointed that the Garmin maps don't highlight official cycle paths.

Switched to the Android App IpBike on a Galaxy S7 using a Quad Lock case.
    • Battery life same as the 820 (~5h on full brightness, ~9h otherwise)
    • I never used active navigation - following a gpx overlay on the map is better on the phone's big screen.
    • It couples fine to my Ant+ Speed/Cadence/Power Sensors and uploads to Strava (and to Garmin Connect etc using tapiriik)
    • When I really want to ride against Strava segments I just open Strava on the phone in parallel.
    Never looked back.

I also agree w/ above. My 820 works good for me, but I don't think it's worth the price.

Your original question was on screen size. I love the size of the 820 as it sits somewhat protected over the stem (on a SRAM mount). The 1000 would stick out more past the handle bar or below the stem which I would not love. But with that said, I wish I had a bigger screen when navigating. As stated above the 820 is slow to pan (which I can deal with) but the slow response and smaller screen does make finding your way a bit more difficult. I would probably choose the 1000 if I could start over because of the larger screen and faster response and just deal with the lager unit sticking out on the bars.
