gradient issues again after 31.31

I'm having issues again with latest update with gradient readings !!! Spikes of -8% and +8% everywhere !!! Absolute crazy. Have they F...k.... this again?

  • I gave up on the Garmin gradient last week, and downloaded a gradient app from the IQ store. We'll see how that works out. Initial ride, there were some rather large fluctuations in gradient, but at least on false flat and slight inclines, the readout appeared more accurate. I adjusted the distance over which the gradient calculates, and we'll see if that smooths the numbers a bit.

  • I also tried that approach by testing third-party gradient/elevation apps, but in my experience they only mask the problem. The results are still poor and often questionable.

My impression is that the Garmin firmware is already providing incorrect or unstable barometric altitude data, and the Connect IQ apps can only work with the values they receive. They attempt to smooth or recalculate the gradient, but if the input data is already wrong, the output can only improve so much.

In practice, I didn't find the results significantly better than Garmin's own gradient field. They simply fail in a different way.

This is why I still believe Garmin needs to investigate the root cause rather than expecting third-party apps to compensate for it.

  • In fact, I retested the garmin(with advance grade(1) and xoss earlier today and results were close, however, the garmin really has a delay of 3-5 seconds.

On the end of the downhill earlier, In xoss its already reading 1%(the correct one) but in garmin still reading 4% even after 5 seconds already.

I agree, garmin's default grade was more accurate and faster.

    This is really disappointing.

  • Just an update folks, I dowloaded the 50% 31.33 update just few minutes ago and tested it..The same witj the 50% update of 31.31, the gradient worked again..I hope that it will stay as it is when 31.33 is fully complete.

  • The new firmware update 31.33(50% rollout) seem to fix the gradient accuracy of my Garmin 540. Just tested it today right after I download the initial update 31.33 and the gradient accuracy is about 90%. The same case happened for the update 31.31, it fixed the gradient accuracy but after the update was 100%, the gradient is inaccurate again.
I am hoping that it will not go back  inaccurate gradient again when 31.33 is 100% compete.

Garmin, this issue has been for ages already and we are losing faith every time you release an update without fixing the same issue. With all the information and feedback from Garmin users, you should be able to determine that it is already a firmware/software issue and not a hardware issue. So stop recommending us the same steps you know we already did and stop asking us to return the device for replacement.

Garmin was the pinnacle of cycling computers before and now, we are no longer sure. Additionally, we are not confident to promote Garmin to our bike friends.

Please make this update the update that will fix this issue.

  • Update: I did delete the advance grade(1) and set the default grade for garmin on my data screens, then I tested it and boom!!!, it is not accurate again.
So, I did an update check via wifi(which I normally do) and it did ask to add a network again, this happens only if my Garmin did some update and it means that it did update somehow while on sleep.
So this could mean that it is a 100% complete 31.33 already and the same thing happened with 31.31 update previouslty.
Conclusion is that the first 50% update is fixing the gradient accuracy issue and will make it not work again after the second update to make it 100% complete update.

  • bro, it was never accurate, it was always random day by day...

what you wrote with the update's status is totally nonsense Joy

  • Not sure with your experience bro. I honestlly feel bad for you if that the case with you.

Well, let's give them comments like that foe them to know.

  • the update status means how much users got it already (just meanwhile you rode 2-3times... if you installed it very quickly). the grade% is varying from everything , if you do rounds during a training on a hill, it gives you always different numbers in every lap. and totally different value on uphill and downhill direction on the same ascent if you test it. so as that you experienced a "good" result at first is just a coincidence but in general it is random (as you experienced at your 2nd attemt with this new fw)

  • This issue is not limited to the Edge 540. It has also been widely reported by users of the Edge 840 and Edge 1040, so this appears to be a common issue affecting multiple current-generation Edge models rather than a device-specific fault.

Unfortunately, firmware 31.33 does not appear to resolve the problem. Many users continue to report inconsistent gradient readings after updating, exactly as has been described throughout this thread.

The behaviour is also not isolated to a few individual units. Reports have been coming from users all over the world, , pointing to a global software issue rather than isolated hardware failures.

At this point, several customers have already returned their devices under warranty or decided to sell them because gradient accuracy is one of the key features they rely on for climbing, and confidence in the displayed value has been lost.

Garmin really needs to acknowledge that this issue affects multiple Edge models and provide a technical explanation of what has changed in the gradient calculation, together with a firmware fix, rather than treating each report as an isolated case.
