Garmin Express was able to see the unit. I set up the wifi which seemed to take. Then there was a pending update and it complained about not having enough space to accept a firmware update so I deleted a map and restarted the firmware update. No indication that the firmware update was proceeding and then after several minutes of no user feedback from the user interface nor the unit itself, I looked at the unit and it appeared to be dead. I disconnected the unit from the USB and tried to reboot it and it was stuck in the forever starting/loading state and the USB port was unresponsive.
Apparently the units firmware was corrupted... that is my only guess.
I tried a hard reset -- power button for 20 seconds and got the unit into a screen for power off and sleep options. None of the buttons worked. Then I tried pressing the power button and new lap button simultaneously and the screen flashed the Garmin logo and loader number. The loader is probably looking for a simple script program that will reflash the unit. But the USB port is dead so that won't work. Must be some manufacturing feature and test points on the PCBA that is not accessible to customers. Garmin Express is probably too high level to do this. Besides, you need a functional USB port to communicate with the unit.
Anyway, I gave up and requested a refund from Amazon. The unit is defective and the unit is on its way back to Amazon. My son ordered a replacement and ETA is in a couple of days.

I am a long time customer of Garmin and generally I have had pretty good luck with them. Especially the older products.
However...
My Oregon 700 got a leaking flat screen. That was an expensive loss since it had map software installed on it. Never seen a screen leak before and I have had my Garmin GPSs in all environments and all types of abuse. Never real abuse but all temperature extremes and rain and snow. I never mistreated the Oregon but it is related to the fact and complexity of a touch screen. It just started developing a black smudge that got larger and larger. Edge 540 is strike two. BTW, I currently use my old beater GPSMap64st as nav for my bike and I love it. I have a number of older GPS units and a couple of car cameras.
So I am a "faithful customer" so please don't let me down. Please improve your quality and I will give a second Edge 540 a chance.
