Edge 520 Backlight stopped working

Hey guys my garmin edge 520 backlight stopped working recently.

settings :
brightness = 100%
backlight is set to Auto ( but tried day and night )
backlight is set to always on.

I read some other posts and my issue sounds like what others are saying about toggling the power button accidennyly so that my backlight is on 0%.

When I try the same steps I cant seem to get them to work.

With the garmin on I tap the power button once. That takes me to the brightness screen which has 100% brightness

When I press it again it goes back to the main screen with "ride" on it.

Press it again and back to the brightness screen.

I tried holding the power button longer but that just turns off the device.

Also tried double tapping power but that does the same as single tap.

Not sure if I am doing it wrong or if my backlight is just dead.

Others say that when the Garmin turns on that they can see the backlight for a few seconds, I can't see any light with my one.

I can read it at daytime but not nighttime when it has a black background on white text.

The display looks the same whether brightness is 0% - 50% or 100%

( It worked fine for about 40 rides and only stopped working this week - brightness button used to make display brighter.)

Appreciate any help :-)

Cheers!!
