Exactly the same bug than me with cycle map. forums.garmin.com/.../edge-1050-issue-with-navigation-instructions

I've deleted all the maps (except basemap), reboot the edge, then reinstalled the maps from scratch (no upgrade). And now it works fine. I've reinstalled the maps using WiFi, but it looks a very long time (more than 10 hours for Europe maps - 17 Gb). Maybe it will also work using garming express (and it's way faster).

To delete the maps, go into menu / system / map manager (or something similar, my edge is in french)

Bought a 1050 today but my navigation map only shows the street I'm going to at the top.

Previously, it also displayed the distance to the next exit, which counted down in meters to the exit.

I don't see this anymore. Can someone tell me how to turn it back on? Is this profile-dependent?

Hopefully, someone can tell me how to fix this.

Info:

Edge 1050 SW 31.31.

Turn Guidance works correctly.

Turn List shows all distances and street names.

Top map banner only displays “Go to ” without the distance.

Factory reset performed.

New activity profile created.

Turn Guidance enabled.

Navigation Prompts = Map.

Guide Text = Always.

Same GPX worked correctly on Edge 530.

Hi, no customer maps installed, but I see on the edge that the garmin cycle maps 2024.10 are still on it also with the TopoActive 2026.11 maps. I only can disable the maps, how do I remove them?

Do you have any customer maps installed? If yes, where on the file system did you place them?

If you do have custom map installed the first thing to do would be to disable them by change the name of the file extension or removing them off the Edge.

If that fixes the issue then we know it something related to the custom maps.

I’ve spent serious time on all of the top three. They all suck but in different ways. You get to pick the version of suck you want.

Compared to other consumer electronics, bike computers are at the bottom of the pile.

Your software is ***. My top-tier device constantly fails to sync activities, which is its fundamental purpose. It frequently drops Bluetooth sensors, leaving me uncertain before every ride whether it will connect to my power meter and heart rate monitor or successfully transfer data to Garmin Connect.

If the software remains this unreliable, you should at least provide a functional way to export files. A "History > Long Press > Share" feature is a basic requirement you have overlooked. It is clear this device has not been adequately tested by anyone who actually uses it for its intended engineering purpose.

You have one job: ensure the device records and syncs the event. Fix it.

There was an active thread on this topic but it seems to have been locked going back about 4 months ago. I reported this to Garmin back in August 2026 and there were already several pages of people with the same issue with their 1050 back then......and more recently about 10 pages of people with seemingly the identical problem.

It seems at random times during the ride, the screen will go black or blank for an instant and then come back on (on the same page as when it went blank).

Today it occurred about 3-5 minutes into the ride.

Just because it may have something to do with the issue....I am mentioning that I have a Trek Carback connected (rear facing radar) as well as a SRAM Blip to ring the bell.

My SRAM derailleur is also connected (and has a separate bug with this 1050 that my Edge 530 did not have as well, where the gear is reported as 1st gear incorrectly when I start a ride or pause the ride for too long)

I have the latest firmware, I think it is 30.18.

On the prior thread, it seems MANY people had sent their units back to Garmin and many seemed to have reported that the new replacement units demonstrate the SAME issue.

I do not know if it is a hardware or software issue. I am starting a new thread, just so we can track if there has been any new progress on the issue, or if we can come up with something else our setups, sensors, etc. may have in common.

Please chime in if you have found any fix or something that helps (or causes it to happen). Since it is intermittent and may not happen every day (or even for a few days) it is hard to tell with each firmware update if it has been fixed, but since the glitch happened this morning, I would guess it has not been fixed as of yet.

Please chime in also if you sent yours in for replacement and whether this fixed or did not fix the problem.

I can tell you that this issue or anything similar did NOT happen with any of my prior Garmin Edge devices. (Edge 530, Edge Touring as well as others)

Of course I can complain! We've been trying to resolve this with Garmin for a while now, sending them videos and data constantly. When something is wrong, you have to speak up; that's precisely what beta versions are for, to try and fix bugs.

I haven't had the problem again (or maybe I just don't pay much attention to it anymore), but this new brightness issue is a real pain! The brightness starts blinking and then after a while it goes full blast, the Garmin is practically burning hot, and you'll never guess how I fix it? By hitting it! It's the only way to get it back to normal, and all this started after the last beta update; until then it was working perfectly. I'm getting a bit fed up with this whole thing.

I follow, I´ve exactly the same, a couple days ago this was working fine on my edge 1050, now only 'go to road name´... I also send request to garmin.

Auto brightness on or off doesn't matter. Tried both. Even without a connection to sensors (just put it on the table and keep an eye on it) the problem occurs. Probably not a software error, but driver of the screen maybe? Then Garmin probably won't solve it. I've had the 1050 for a year now and of course I don't always see it when I cycle, but think about 1 time every 80 km.

And I keep auto brightness OFF, all of the time, and see the drop-outs fairly frequently (a few times a week), so I don't think it has ANYTHING to do with the auto brightness. And Garmin has been "gathering information" for well more than a year.......Hopefully they are further along than the "gathering" stage.

Yes, I had the same problem with auto brightness turned off in my previous unit. I didn't notice during indoor activities. Probably because I don't ride a lot using an indoor trainer.

Yes, it perhaps might bother me less if this occurred on a $75 thing....rather than a top of the line, flagship model.

Yes, mine did it while charging and not actually turned on. That's a fairly low level software issue, if it is software.

First........prior to this thread, there was a prior one that was locked....but I think it had like 10 pages of responses.......and, at least from memory, I think there were several/many returns or exchanges......and I do not remember anyone saying that the new device no longer exhibited the problem. That is why I did have not exchanged mine yet. That does not limit it to hardware, since a firmware or software issue would likely still cause the same problem on the new unit (but I still lean toward a hardware issue). I think it is MORE common problem that they admit......with the 1050. I have had many prior Garmin cycling computers and none did this (all prior models), so I think it is limited to the 1050 perhaps. Also, someone on this thread earlier (months ago) has already posted a video of this on a trainer. (and have also mentioned that it occurs WITHOUT any sensors or connections at all....so perhaps it is something inherent in the device or software and has nothing to do with other connections. I called twice about 8 months apart and both times Garmen acted like it was a new problem, and both times they tried to convince me to send mine back (even though the dozens of prior 1050's sent back did not give them a clue as to what was going on.) A Garmin representative, reportedly watched the video from this post and said they will work on a solution perhaps, but that was months ago.

I am guessing that MOST or MANY units do this, but it is just missed by people that don't watch their units continuously. Mine functions to show me my Trek Radar, and I am often on a busy street....so I watch it fairly constantly.

and to answer your other question....my initial post lists my connections.....but they include...my iPhone 16, my Trek Car Back Radar/rear light, my SRAM derailleur, my SRAM Blip (used to ring the Garmin 1050's bike bell).

So come on Garmin.......here's hoping you take this seriously and really try to come up with a solution. Thanks

I have HRM Dual, Rally RS210 and Varia RTL515 paired with mine. I too am losing faith in a very expensive product.

So, here it is again, the new Edge 1050 from Garmin (exchanged for exactly this problem) shows the same behavior, one second dark screen. So please Garmin - CF advise. I don't think that it will make any sense to do the exchange again, I'm already on my third device that shows this error.

Maybe some questions and suggestions to all others that have seen this behavior:

Has anyone seen this behavior with auto brightness turned off? Maybe someone can test this on an indoor ride?
i have four sensors connected - Rally 200, speed sensor 2, HRM Pro Plus, Varia Radar RTC715, anybody else with that kind of configuration?
I've set up the new device from the scratch, no backup, no copy of files into some folders
I've seen this behavior with many different firmwares, in the moment the last actual non beta version is installed (31.33), so it seems that is is firmware independent

I don't know of what to do now, but also i won't tolerate such a bug on a +700€ device!

Did and update to 31.31 and maps. garmin express downloaded the maps, then device disconnected from PC

i powered it off and on and got the screen 'loading courses workouts and locations' it stuck there,

held power button for 30 seconds it rebooted then offered me updating to 31.31 which it did but now when reboots its stuck back on this screen.

I havent tried a factory reset this is a last resort, anything i can try in the meantime? or should i just leave it on this screen will it eventually boot?

When using the Live Track, everything works well - except the Spectator Message.

The connection to the phone is fine, also the LTE signal.
The LiveTrack data is live in the website. GroupRide messages are working well, sent/received immediately. Phone notifications also working fine.

But the Spectator Message sent via Live Track is not received until the activity is over. When the activity ends, all messages are delivered.

So, I believe it's not related to Bluetooth connectivity nor LTE, since all other connectivity features are working as intended.

Only the Spectator Messages are delayed.

Anybody knows any fix/workaround to try?

EDGE 1050, fw31.30.
iPhone 15 Pro, iOS 26.5,
Garmin Connect iOS Version 5.26 (latest).
