I tried to extract the complete archive of 13.2GB, but the message comes out saying that the archive is damaged. Has it happened to someone else?

Since updating to firmware 31.31 and installing the TopoActive Europe 2026.11 maps, I have noticed significant lag when following a route in navigation mode using a GPX file.

The map no longer updates smoothly and there is a delay in the position tracking, especially when changing direction or approaching an intersection. The map rotation and redraw speed are noticeably slower than before.

Yesterday I was riding a MTB route and, fortunately, it was signposted because if I had relied solely on the GPS instructions, I would probably still be waiting for them…

Is anyone else experiencing the same issue on the Edge 1040 since these updates?

I’ve had several Edge devices and they’re next to useless for me as I can barely discern the display while riding. I purchased the Edge 1040 primarily due to the marketing highlighting a brighter display yet it’s still abysmal. 100% brightness on the 1040 correlates to about 20% to 30% brightness on my cell phone, which for me is completely unreadable in the sun.

Is the display actually adequate for most of you guys to use in sunlight?

Any suggestions or hacks to somehow increase the brightness?

Battery life is meaningless if the device is unusable.

It also depends a bit if you have the solar or non-solar version. I have the first and I find it often hard to read when the sun is at strong angles or if the device is in the shade but the background is bright. I think here the solar panel makes the visibility bad and gives this red-ish tint to the display which does not really help.

I do not know if I am the only one but my friend with an older 830 has a better visibility and crispier display. Currently I am trying to sell my 1040 solar to get an 840/1040 non-solar.

Your alternative could still be to get a x50 serie with a much brighter display. The 850 is beautiful but the battery is a bit short. The 1050 would be ideal but it is too expensive in my opinion.

Did you include the geocode, gma files ? Try the big archive (13.2 gb)

If you don't include the geocode &: gma files the uploaded maps won't work.

I have instaled the Maps with the current firmware to see if it works but it didnt, its a no go! Maybe just instaling the old firmware and old maps combo.

I will try next ...

Meanwhile we have new beta firmware, finally!!!!

Yes. This display only has a backlight, so that's what Garmin is referring to as brightness. Here's what little there is in the manual:

Using the Backlight

You can tap the touchscreen to turn on the backlight.

NOTE: You can adjust the backlight timeout (Display Settings).

From the home screen or a data screen, swipe down from the top of the screen.
Select an option:
- To manually adjust the brightness, select , and use the slider bar.
- To allow the device to automatically adjust the brightness based on the ambient light, select Auto.

Thanks for the feedback. When you guys say you adjust the backlight you mean the “Brightness” setting, correct?

Some types of devices have both, Brightness and Backlight are technically different, but I only see a Brightness setting.

Yeah. It's different from a modern cell phone as it uses an old-school transreflective LCD, which should have much lower power consumption. I find it OK in direct sunlight without any backlighting. I find it hard to see if there's bright sunlight but the device is in the shade, like the sun is behind me and my body shades the device. I find a backlight level of ~30% helps with that.

If I'm understanding this correctly, you bought an Edge, found it was next to useless for you, then continued to buy a number of Edges each of which you were unable to see properly when riding. Did you ever consider looking for an alternative to the Edge?

For me, the 1040 screen is always visible even in direct sunlight. I have the backlight set to auto so it is mostly off. It is much more visible than my slightly more expensive phone.

My only suggestion would be to check the angle at which it is set. I find that horizontal or sloping slightly downwards works best.

If that doesn't work you'll have to look for an alternative. Since your phone appears to be three to five times brighter than the Edge you could use that at least for navigation. There are a number of apps. Cycle.travel do a good one and it's free. I believe there are apps which will convert your phone into a bike computer, although I don't believe they are free. I'm sure a quick search would find them.

Failing any of these 'solutions' ditch the bike computer and admire the scenery.

Despite reporting this in an early Beta the battery percentage for 1040 is unusable.

The battery indicator is a safety status issue for bikepacking / audace events where loosing the device / navigation out on a long course could be critical.

Yesterday, my battery went *UP* from 84% to 98% during a 4hr ride in the battery datafield indicator.

Swiping down to see the status showed the same value.

I don’t know how to be able to ride for the next 9 days off-road on this release version and keep a single route file for completion reporting.

I have no idea how something this simple, yet major - and reported - could pass quality control. I can only assume some marketing deal with forced deadlines for this release as it appears the buggiest yet…. And feedback to the beta forum is none-existent. Perhaps timelines have also suffered fallout from the need to address the 2026.10 maps.

There are several other issues reported as addressed that are *NOT* fixed (at least on the 1040, where the changelog comes from) such as removal of daily suggestions and ClimbPro layout, there are things reported as fixed that were only introduced as regressions in the beta so should not be live changelog items (course list crashing) and “fixed” things that have no documentation as to how they should work, and only “work” in a specific way that makes people think it doesn’t (AutoZoom)

… I could go on, but pls just fix the battery status first

Preventing firmare update

I really start be too frustrated to keep using Garmin devices… I owned several Fenix, Epix and Edge.

every time there is a software update is a gambling, too many times it just makes problems, so is just too much to ask to have a toggle to switch off automatic updates? I do not neeed new fancy functions if in the end the basics elevation, routes or maps are just wrong and make impossible to use the device.

Especially in backpacking the best features are stabitly and reliability, so when I get (at last) a firmware that works, I just would be happy to be able to keep it for the next foreseeable future.

I cannot keep risking (again) during a trip that the unit keeps restarting, or as happened today that elevation is not recorded at all

it’s f***ng annoying that month after month and year after year every time there is a problem.

ONE FEATURE, JUST ONE SIMPLE FEATURE, DISABLE AUTOMATIC UPDATE!!!!!!!!!

For me this the last shot after that I will switch to other brands, not so fancy (maybe) but definitely more stable.

you *can* decline an update. when the update screen appears, just touch the back arrow at the top-left corner.

I am still on 30.18 - that works just ok, with no critical issues - and I refuse to update of course.

It is well known for garmin that they cripple their old devices with "updates". It happens every time. For a new device you just need to wait until they fix the major issues and then you must stop to update.

Anyway, - apart from the critical bug fixes - there is no point to update, basically every garmin new "feature" they've introduced on any new commercial device for years is simply a useless gimmick.

If you buy a garmin, do it for the HW, and hope for the best regarding the SW.

I have managed to downgrade to 28.22 and 25.25 firmware. In both using 2026.11 maps is sluggish, impossible to navigate, takes minutes to load the map. Only after removing these maps, and putting OpenTopoMap now 1040 is fast and snappy as it was when i bought it in the middle of 2024. I think that either using 3rd party maps like OpenTopoMaps or somebody else providng files for 2025.10 maps is the only solution for making this device somewhat usefull. For now i stay with my Elmnt Ace 🙂

Same here. Firmware 31.33 and Edge 1040. Battery indicator remains stuck at 100% even after a 3 hour ride. Last ride: 11 sept 2026.

Mon Garmin Edge 1040 détecte et se connecte avec succès au capteur de fréquence cardiaque Huawei Watch Fit 4. Cependant, la connexion est immédiatement interrompue, le statut passe à « Recherche » et les données ne sont pas disponibles sur l'Edge 1040.

J'ai fait le test avec la Forerunner 165 de ma femme et ça fonctionne parfaitement.

J'ai pu lire qu'il fallait faire une rétrogradation du firmware à la version 29.20 mais j'hésite vraiment...et je trouve ça vraiment dommage !

Vigorous Intensity minutes

Can anyone explain what is going on with vigorous intensity minutes? I'm using LTHR for my heart rate zones.

Yesterday I did a 30 minute ride. Z5 4.48 minutes, Z4 11.08 minutes and 12 vigorous minutes.

Same ride today but I tried a bit harder. Z5 18.02 minutes, Z4 7.37 minutes and 16 vigorous minutes.

This cannot possibly make sense. For the first ride all the time in Z5 and around 7 minutes of the time in Z4 must make up the vigorous minutes.

For the second ride 2 minutes of the Z5 and all of the Z4 fail to count as vigorous minutes.

I don't understand how this is possible, but I'm hopeful that someone will be able to explain. It's either that or the whole idea, as measured by Garmin, is nonsense. But as it's a key metric in fitness age it does need to work.
