1040 Solar 31.33 battery drain in sleep mode

I have had a Garmin Edge 1040 Solar bike computer for 4 years now. It used to be that I would finish a ride, it would have like 60% charge, I would press the side button, it would go to sleep, and then I wouldn't use it for weeks or some times a couple months. I would pick it up and it would have maybe 55% charge, so the charge would drain very, very slowly if not used - under 10% per week.

Recently, maybe after an update, I noticed that I finish the ride, I would put it to sleep as usual, and it would be at 90%. A week later, I would pick it up, it would be almost drained or completely drained. Over 4 years owning the computer I never found myself picking up my bike with a drained computer. I had it at 10-15% which would be enough for a short ride, after which I would charge it fully. Now, since not so long ago, if I don't ride for a week or two, I pick it up and it's drained.

Note that I'm not talking about the computer being powered off - I have seen a few posts here reporting drain after being powered off. This is not what I'm talking about. I had never powered it off in the past. I always pressed the side button which put it to sleep and that was enough to avoid drain. I am doing the same thing now, but now it drains.

Has anyone else seen that?

Battery Status for 31.29 Critical Bug

Despite reporting this in an early Beta the battery percentage for 1040 is unusable.

The battery indicator is a safety status issue for bikepacking / audace events where loosing the device / navigation out on a long course could be critical.

Yesterday, my battery went *UP* from 84% to 98% during a 4hr ride in the battery datafield indicator.

Swiping down to see the status showed the same value.

I don’t know how to be able to ride for the next 9 days off-road on this release version and keep a single route file for completion reporting.

I have no idea how something this simple, yet major - and reported - could pass quality control. I can only assume some marketing deal with forced deadlines for this release as it appears the buggiest yet…. And feedback to the beta forum is none-existent. Perhaps timelines have also suffered fallout from the need to address the 2026.10 maps.

There are several other issues reported as addressed that are *NOT* fixed (at least on the 1040, where the changelog comes from) such as removal of daily suggestions and ClimbPro layout, there are things reported as fixed that were only introduced as regressions in the beta so should not be live changelog items (course list crashing) and “fixed” things that have no documentation as to how they should work, and only “work” in a specific way that makes people think it doesn’t (AutoZoom)

… I could go on, but pls just fix the battery status first

We believe this issue has been resolved in the current public beta software, v31.63. Users who would like to receive the fix before the next public release can enroll in the beta program here: Enrolling in and Learning About Garmin Beta Software Program

If you prefer not to install beta software, the fix is also expected to be included in an upcoming public software release for the Edge 1040 series.

We appreciate everyone's patience while this was investigated and your assistance in providing feedback along the way!

I have the same issue with my Venu 4. The Venu 4, connect mobile and website all have the same coaches plan but the Edge 1040 had a different one

On my 1040, I’m getting a different DSW than on the FR 265. Can the FR 265's DSW be synchronized with the 1040?

Elevation stock on 0 with Edge 1040 Solar

The Elevation on my Edge 1040 Solar has recently become stuck on 0 all the time. It used to work fairly well till recently. I didn't damage the unit or get it dirty or wet.

I tried cleaning the barometer port (though it already seemed pretty clean), rebooting, and checking for updates. It's already running the latest 31.33.

Auto-calibration of the altimeter is already on. Manually recalibrating via GPS or DEM gives pretty reasonable numbers, but still Elevation remains stuck on 0 all the time.

Weirdly, Grade % shows plausible numbers (though laggy as usual).

Anyone else have this problem? Did something break in an update?

press and hold the power button for 20s apprx (until the Edge turns off by itself and a Garmin logo pops up with screen flickering), and try again (mostly it helps)

Thanks for posting about this, tfidalgo! A minor amount of movement or slight drift when you are completely stopped can be normal, just as long as it isn't continuously spinning or wildly erratic. This FAQ goes into detail on what factors can affect the accuracy or the electronic compass: What Affects the Accuracy of the Electronic Compass on My Garmin Device?

As L.Rouge and Luko79 mentioned, a manual calibration away from interference should help. Here is exactly how to do that on your Edge 1040:

Take the device outside, making sure not to stand near objects that influence magnetic fields (such as vehicles, buildings, and overhead power lines).
On your Edge, select Menu > System > Calibrate Compass.
Select Calibrate and follow the on-screen instructions.

Let us know if the calibration helps stabilize it for you!

5 Hours of busting my gut, I press STOP on the Garmin, get off the bike and remove the device from it's holder and... hey presto! No activity. Not trace. Thinking I had just stopped it, I pressed START again and probably overwrote any chance I had of recovering the file.
It's kind of the main function of the device. How hard would it be to add a Trash/Deleted folder?
This seriously makes me want to switch brands.

it happened to me. When I stopped the activity after 320km, the device became unresponsive, I started touching the screen and when it got back to responsiveness, it used my touches to discard and confirm... bad luck for sure, but on such a slow and buggy device, recovering some hard work shall be possible.

I lost 320 of my 4000km to Nordkapp... 😞

I 'm def not arguing against a trash bin, but FWIW, I have mine set to prompt starting when I reach 6kph. As often as not when I start a ride, I'll look down at the Edge and see it prompting me to hit the Start Button because I hadn't yet. And for me, saving the activity and looking at my summary data before powering it down has always been a very deliberate process.

Select > Activity Profiles.
Select a profile.
Select Timer > Timer Start Mode.
Select an option:
- Select Manual, and select to start the activity timer.
- Select Prompted to display a visual reminder when you reach the start notice speed.
- Select Auto to start the activity timer automatically when you reach the start speed.

It happens. I did it twice when started navigate the route and didnt press Start button to start activity recording. Navigation worked fine, all turn by turn notifications and yadayada suprise at the end :D This was lesson I learned that route navigation and activity recording are 2 different processes.

...I rode for 5 hours, I would have noticed if Start had not been pressed.

I'm sorry but I disagree. Firstly, it shouldn't be so easy to delete an activity that it can be done removing the unit from handle bars.
Secondly when you delete a file on your computer it goes into a Recycle Folder. How difficult would it be to replicate that in a Garmin device?

IDK, but there might be interference from nearby electronic devices, vehicles, buildings, or overhead power lines. How does it behave out in the open away from anything that might create varying magnetic fields?

mine was the same , then i made a calibration and now it is mostly stable or moving between 2 numbers only.

It is "normal" (for garmin) but not correct, try compass calibration

Menu>System>Calibrate Compass

Might have to be done frequently (weekly?), if that does not "fix" it then contact Garmin Support as there might also be a hardware issue

Hope this doesn't come across as pedantic, but I wear my Fenix 8 all the time, including when cycling and recording the ride with my 1040, and don't have any issues. If, however, I actively set the watch to record the ride as well as the 1040 then I would be prepared for some clash related issues, not to mention duplicate activities being logged on Connect and Strava.

Activity minutes from bicycle ride, recorded on Edge 1040S, do not show up on Connect. I was wearing my Fenix watch.during the ride.Connect gets the data from the Edge, and reports it to connect but I it doesn’t use the data. This presents two problems, one is that two Garmin devices measuring the same activity do not provide similar readings for HR. The second is that the best device for recording HR, chest strap, is not being prioritized. Lastly, the worst of the conflicting data is being chosen. Please fix this bug. This happened in this manner for the first time this week to me.

Crossroads as Hazards

I’ve recently noticed that my Garmin flags crossroads as a hazards. Fair enough but it would be more useful to have it flagged as a crossroad and maybe tell me the name of the road. Flagging it as a hazard is fine but what bugs me is that after I cross the road, it asks me if the hazard is still there. Um, it’s a paved, state maintained road. It has been there for decades and probably will be for several decades to come. In fact, I would be really concerned if one day it wasn’t there. Is anyone else experiencing this and does it bug you as much as it does me?
