SW BUG - Read only File

When a GPX or FIT file with ´Read Only’ attribut is copied to the Newfiles directory, the Edge 1040/1030/1030 plus enters in an infinite loop on poweron, when the loader reads the GPX files written in Newfiles directory to convert them in FIT then try to remove the GPX source file.

Workaround (waiting Garmin bug correction) is to poweroff the device, then boot in USB Mass Storage : hold down LAP button while powering the device by plugging the GPS to a PC with the USB cable, wait until the GPS enters in Mass Storage ( wait up to 40s)

  • Given how long this behavior existed, it seems like it's a very rare problem. I wouldn't expect it to be fixed.

Avoiding this problem might require an alteration of procedures on your side.

Why are you using the read-only attribute on the files you are copying?

Where are you getting the route files from?

  • Hi

Once my tracks are prepared, to avoid deleting/modifying them (we share these files with my wife), I protect the GPX files as read-only.
Normally, I remove this ReadOnly protection before copying the GPX files into the 'Newfile' directory of the GPS, but sometimes I forget it (when I'm tired...).

This bug should be fixed by Garmin, because if users get a protected file, they could fall into the same case.
  • Doesn’t matter.

It’s not likely Garmin will fix it.

”Prepared”? How? What are they prepared from?

People usually use planning software, which provides a backup.

  • I agree and would also say this is not a “fix”. I doubt that these files should ever be read only on the device intentionally.  Any standard method of transferring the files does not make them read only.

Basically a user has found by circumventing normal processes and procedures that something doesn’t work and expects a fix to make it work.
