Calories Count between Edge 1000 and Vivoactive 3

I'm often wondered if my Edge 1000 was calculating calories burned high or not..

I'm currently 33 yr old male, 5'7, and 215lbs.

In garmin settings my activity class is set to a "4".

So here is my issue I just can't figure out. I tested my Edge 1000 vs the vivoactive 3 both connected to the same heart rate monitor during my 30min indoor bike ride.

Results:

Edge 1000

  • Avg HR: 160bpm
  • Max HR: 177bbm
  • Cal Burn: 851

VivoActive 3

  • Avg HR: 160bpm
  • Max HR: 177bbm
  • Cal Burn: 457

So everything is the same but the cal burn. Yikes! So my +/- error in the reading is 394 cal over a 30 minute period. So in a typical 2 hour bike ride, my estimated cal burn could be off by as much 50% of my daily calories. This seems unacceptable, and have no idea which to trust, or what to do?

  • I'm definitely no expert on this, but different devices use different algorithms. If you're not using a power meter - and I assume, given that you've not stated any power data, that you're not - the figure you're getting will be a fairly wild estimate in any case.
