Quality of data and service through Garmin Pilot in South Africa?

I'm planning to fly in South Africa soon-ish. As a Garmin Pilot user on Android who started using it in the US and then used Garmin Pilot in Europe (and felt the quality of the presented info/features/price effectiveness dropping radically), what am I looking at when going to South Africa and adding another subscription on top? What should I be expecting when flying in South Africa quality-wise? How's the quality of the weather briefing in GP? Are there any VFR (the subscription page says, yes..) but also airport/arrival/.. charts available? I am aware that the quality of publicly available information might also differ from the US.. so the question is: how close to "presenting all the publicly available data" is GP in SA?

I'm seriously considering whether I should invest in another subscription for GP (which has been my "well-known & goto ecosystem" but where I apparently only get a fraction of all the features I'm paying for on my Android phone, which I use when flying - the last Android update is 5months old, synchronization was broken after the flights iOS update,...) or whether I'm better served with purpose-built alternatives, like EasyCockpit.

Redesign of the "Flights" page not useful.

What am I missing? It appears the recent changes to the “Flights” page are not intuitive, or are focused for the biz-jet community and not the smaller piston community.

Climb/Cruise/Descent – What is this block suppose to be displaying? No information is displayed other than “Estimated”. What is “estimated”; fuel?, time? Opening this block appears to allow a “power setting”, but is blank and does nothing.

Payload – When AC loading and determining the CG are very important for smaller AC, how is a generic people and cargo count useful? Why do I have to scroll up (not apparent/hidden) the app to get to the W&B page? Can I change this default?

Weight Limits – This is misleading or something is wrong with my setup. All runways list the AC’s structural weight limit; and always show the longest runway. I can’t figure out how to change the runway (I often get assigned a different / shorter runway). W&B loading plus a hot high-density altitude day and my ability to accept said shorter runway is sometimes limited by the AC’s weight. How do I change, adapt, or modify this section to show relevant information for the AC’s current loading; and the expected shorter runway?

The app knows what AC I’m using to plan the flight. Why then can’t it display useful information based on the AC type?

I guess I’m going back to my Excel spreadsheet with airport runway lookup tables and density altitude calculator to determine my takeoff and landing distances.

cant change starting fuel on W&B worksheet - I can edit it, save the changes, I come back and its back to what it was. It seems to be locked in to the planes fuel value when the trip was created. I changed the plane profile, edit the value in the load sheet, nothing changes it.

Pilot flight menu is poorly laid out

the flight menu is not consistent depending on which tab you are on. When on "Flight plan" it does show "stored flight plans" but when on "summary" or "details" it does not show "stored flight plans". And while we are on that subject it would be much more intuitive to have a "Save flight plan" menu option so flight plans can be saved directly while editing them. To have to navigate to "stored flight plans" first to find the save option would be like using microsoft word and the file menu does not have a save option but rather a "Stored Word Fdiles" menu option and once you are there browsing the stored files you get the option to save the current file. makes no sense. should be a direct "save flight plan" menu item that is a peer of "Stored flight plans". And "stored" should be globally replaced with "saved".

Android Pilot bug report - flight plan->summary->create trip does not save the trip that's created. It looks, smells and feels like you have created a trip and lets you edit all trip settings but once you exit its not listed in your trips. Its gone.

trips->add trip->load flight plan does work for turning a flight plan into a trip so thats a workaround.

I started using pilot on my S26+ about 6 months ago. I came to try pilot because I hate apple and foreflight does not run on android. I like pilot but seems to be pretty buggy given its maturity. I recently installed pilot on my new Active 5 tablet and noticed yesterday that many settings did not sync. Things like preferred speed and distance units. Aircraft performance data such as empty weight and CG. I understand the latter bug is getting fixed any day now but its hard to rely on a app when you don't know if changes made on device A will make it to device B. Seems like all settings should be in a local json file on each device and use git to merge and track changes to a master copy in my cloud account which then propagates between devices. Based on the fact that some but not all account settings are syncing I am guessing there is some spaghetti code behind the sync process. Hope this can get fixed with a single unifying sync using git change tracking/merge at its core so this problem is solved once and for all? And what's with the manual "sync" menu with a plethora of "sync" buttons. When/why would users not just want all their settings synced? can you make the default "always sync" and for those users that want manual syncing let them choose which items to never or manual sync?

I would love to see pilot become as popular as foreflight as that would take some market share from apple which, as I mentioned above, I am not fond of. So hoping we can get these "pilot on android" bugs cleaned up soon. Thanks!

Feature Request - during route planning flag when glide circle does not reach a suitable emergency landing runway. Best I can tell there is a feature that shows a glide ring in flight but thats really just telling you "your screwed" if you have an engine failure and there are no airports in your glide ring. Or you could add to your in in flight workload and play a video game where you constantly adjust course and altitude in real time chasing capturing at least one airport in your glide ring. Or - add another check to the route checker that flags when glide does not reach a suitable emergency landing runway. Preflight checks already flag when weather minimums are not met, sigmets are bad, or TFRs are active. Seems like an easy incremental feature to add this with very high safety value.

Zooming Map and Route does not

Well plenty of crashing going on and not much to say about that.

The one thing that is consistently wrong is zooming in and out, the map is fine but the route does not. Scale is off and doesn't stay connected to the proper waypoints. The only way to fix it is shut down the app and restart it. Ugh, it is getting old while in flight.

Using latest version and iOS. iPad a couple of years old.

Is it a known bug?

At the Apple Platforms State of the Union they appear to have confirmed that an iPhone fold is coming. "Now instead of designing for specific devices and orientations, you're designing for a dynamic range of sizes and aspect ratios."

They now offer support for resizable iOS apps and iPhone mirroring in the beta dev software and apparently the full size matches the leaks of the form factor of the new folding iPhone when open.

I'm about due for a new phone so I think I'll get one when available.

Will Garmin optimize Pilot to take advantage of the new form factor? I'd love to skip having a separate iPad mini to carry around.

Dear Garmin team

Garmin Pilot (Europe) is unable to show the relevant charts for the activated flight. This means that European pilots have to scroll through all procedures/charts of airports and try to find the right plates. This high workload holds me back from using Garmin Pilot for flying in Europe. I'd really like to switch to Garmin, because I prefer the basemap, integration with avionics, etc,

I want to simply select the SID, STAR, Approach in the active flight and then I expect a binder with only those selected procedures. Currently, this feature called "Active Chart Binder" is per support not available in Europe...

Please let me know if this is in the pipeline soon. Thank you!

Logs synced for D2 Mach 2 - altitude and speed?

Hi all,

I’m using my D2Mach2 to log my flights - the log entries are synced to Garmin Pilot - but it seems that some data doesn’t get synced - namely GPS recorded altitude and speed from the watch. Basically, if I look at the activity on Garmin Connect, I can see my track, altitude and speed graphs. On Garmin Pilot, all I see is the track data - it’s showing no data for altitude and speed. Does anyone have any ideas on if there is a way to get that data recognized in Pilot from the data synced over from my D2 Mach 2?

Has anyone sucsessfully copied a flight plan generated in Foreflight and pasted it into Garmin Pilot?

I am looking at starting with Garmin Pilot having used ForFlight for a long time. I have a number of flights saved on ForeFlight which I would like to copy the route and paste it into Garmin Pilot. Is this straight forward and does the Garmin Pilot recognise the routing made by FF?

Print binder

Hi there

I am used to the workflow in Foreflight to plan my flight with a binder. I put in that binder all plates for:

Departure: Taxi diagram, planned SID

Destination: planned STAR, planned/most likely approaches, VFR plate, taxi diagram

Alternate: most likely approaches, taxi diagram

Then I print all of it (at once!) as one PDF file. I use this as backup or print on paper.

My question is, does Garmin Pilot allow printing an entire binder with select plates too? Couldn't find this option yet.

If not possible: This is a feature request. 🙂 Thank you!

How to center on aircraft

The "center on aircraft" control places the current aircraft position near the bottom of the iPad screen (at least in portrait mode). I want it to be in the center like the description of the "center of aircraft" control states. How can I do this?

Sending Route from Garmin APP to GTN750

Hello,

I have a strange problem. I'm using the Garmin Pilot app on a Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 and want to connect it to my GTN 750 in the aircraft via Flightstream. The connection always works perfectly. Everything I enter on the GTN 750 immediately appears in my app as an "update." I can confirm it and see the route on my tablet.

However, I haven't yet figured out why it sometimes fails and sometimes doesn't. I plan a route with Autorouter, receive a PDF, and click the link in the PDF to send it to the Garmin Pilot app. That works, too. I see the route on my tablet. However, I have no way to send it to the aircraft via Connext. The "send" button is simply grayed out. Even restarting the tablet doesn't change anything. If I then enter something directly on the GTN 750, I immediately receive an update on the tablet.

How is this possible?

Garmin Pilot not preserving checklist progress

I am running Garmin Pilot on an iPad Mini 6th Gen (version 26.2). The app is on the latest version (25.12.2)

I'm having an issue where GP won't preserve my checklist progress after I switch to another part of the app and come back to checklists. All progress is reset as if starting new.

I've tried closing the app in the app switcher, soft-resetting the iPad, hard-resetting the iPad to no avail.

Any thing else I can try?

New to Garmin Pilot and trying to create a new aircraft. I used the Piper Warrior aircraft template. Fuel, W&B, Performance all came across great, but it will not import anything for checklists. I tried editing the aircraft after it was created, going to the checklists tab, and import from aircraft, but it won't let me put a checkmark beside checklists. What am I doing wrong?

Garmin can blame the end users all they want, but the problem is well known, widely reported and unresolved. When does Garmin plan to get serious about addressing the problem?
