Gesture feature when lying down is inconsistent

Hello all,

I'm a new Garmin Instinct user who moved from using a Fitbit. I have already searched the forums for a solution and did not find a resolution. It's definitely not the Do Not Disturb settings for me  that seems to cause this issue generally.

The Gesture feature works fine when I'm standing or mobile. However, when I'm in bed and I move my wrist to look at the watch face the gesture feature does not activate. I want to make sure this is not a defect on my device. I really value not having to turn the bedroom light on to check the time. I would prefer it automatically light up without having to press any buttons. Please let me know if there is any additional settings I need to check other than the standard features provided under the Backlight and Do Not Disturb settings, thanks in advance!
