If it is really Instinct 1st generation (you are posting to the forum for that model), then the watch is more likely 3 - 6 years old, so it might have spent couple of years on the shelves at the retailer. Almost 3 years ago, Garmin released Instinct 2, and did not manufacture any Instinct 1st gen devices anymore.

I have an instinct crossover solar. I resolved by restarting. Data was lost, not a significant constraint for me. Thanks for your response .
