17.05 upgrade with issues

I haven’t updated my Garmin Instinct 2S to version 17.05 yet — the update hasn’t rolled out to my device so far.
But once it does, I plan to temporarily remove most third-party apps, widgets, and watch faces before installing it.

The device has limited memory, and I suspect that having too many third-party items — especially ones not built with best practices — can cause issues during the update.
After the update is complete, I’ll reinstall only the essentials.

Hopefully, this will help avoid problems like messed-up glances or missing favorites.

It won't help if you connect the watch to Garmin Express (even without updating the firmware). The current version of GE has a bug deleting the configuration of glances and favorite activities on the watch. New version of GE with a fixed was promised for mid of September. Until then either avoid updating to the current v7.26.0, or wait for the next release. Until then I would not connect the watch to a computer with a running GE at all.

Jeeez, so it was GE update I did right before updating watch... So reverse, I guess it's not firmware as much as GE, how far can Garmin screw things, it's beyond me... Thanks for heads up Trux

Absolutely spot on!  Never jump on a fresh update the moment it drops — give it a couple of months to settle and let others discover the bugs first. 
You don't want to end up with a fancy paperweight instead of a watch.

I’ve got auto-updates turned off on my Instinct 2S. I only update when the firmware’s been out long enough and the community has had time to report any major issues.

I wish I'd known about this yesterday. I unplugged my Instinct 2 Solar from my PC, and it wanted to update. So I did that, then went out and tried to begin a workout on a local track... only to discover that none of my activities were there any more. It wasn't quite as bad as I feared, as all the workout settings were still as I'd left them, I just needed to add them back to the activities list. But at the time I was just like: !@#$ I can't deal with this, and I failed to get that session tracked :-(

In the meantime Garmin released a new version of Garmin Express (v7.27.0), fixing this issue. Make sure to update it before connecting your watch again!

Man, I thought the whole point or having a test version was to avoid such in your face bugs.

Testing beta firmware could not help in this case. The bug was in Garmin Express, not in the firmware of the watch. There is no testing version of Garmin Express as far as I know, at least not any public one. The GE bug erased the favorite activities and glances on devices regardless whether they used beta or PR of the firmware.
