Fenix 8 v22.35: Pace stays at 0:00 and gets stuck, even though GPS is working fine

Hi everyone,
I’ve been encountering a recurring issue since the latest software update. On both Monday and today, I experienced a bug with my pace display during my running workouts: the pace suddenly drops and remains stuck at 0:00 min/km.

Pausing and resuming the activity seems to fix the problem temporarily, but it recurs very quickly. It doesn't appear to be a GPS signal issue, as the route is tracked correctly on the map in real-time, and auto-laps are still triggering as expected.
However, the data analysis for running dynamics (power, ground contact time, etc.) is completely skewed. Furthermore, the pace data on Garmin Connect remains at 0:00. Interestingly, while the data is displayed correctly on Strava, there is a discrepancy between the interval times recorded on Garmin versus those shown on Strava.

On Monday, I tried a soft reset (holding the Light button), but the problem returned today. This time, I attempted to clear the temporary files. Notably, I haven't had this issue on other days; it only occurred this Monday and Wednesday during track sessions with my running club (in a group of about 10 people).
Has anyone else encountered this issue? If so, have you managed to resolve it without having to perform a full factory reset of the watch? This bug is really frustrating because I had to run 'blind' on Monday, and I had to stop and restart the activity today just to get it to work. It’s particularly concerning as I have a race scheduled for this Sunday.

  • Garmin, this response is no longer acceptable.

    This issue has now been reported for more than six weeks. Multiple users have provided consistent reports, screenshots, activity files and reliable reproduction steps:

    • pace works normally at the beginning of a run;

    • after a stride, sprint or rapid acceleration, it drops to 0:00 and often remains there;

    • GPS position, distance and average lap pace continue to be recorded correctly;

    • the FIT files contain invalid speed data;

    • running power and other derived metrics can consequently become seriously corrupted;

    • the issue started with firmware 22.35 and is still present in 22.38;

    • resetting activity settings, reinstalling the firmware and even performing a full factory reset do not provide a reliable solution.

    In my own FIT files, enhanced_speed becomes exactly 0.000 m/s after 30–37 seconds and remains zero while GPS position and distance continue normally. The same activities also contain invalid total-ascent values of 0–1 m despite a valid altitude profile. In one interval session, running power fell to approximately 170–210 W during intervals at around 3:20 min/km and faster, although plausible values of up to 485 W were recorded before the speed data failed.

    This is not a minor display glitch. It corrupts activity data, running power, training analysis and performance metrics. It also makes the watch unreliable during intervals and races—precisely the situations in which athletes most need a premium sports watch to work correctly.

    Fēnix 8 is sold as a flagship sports watch. Repeatedly asking customers to reset settings, reinstall software, factory-reset their watches and provide the same information again is not an adequate response after six weeks. At this stage, Garmin is effectively transferring the burden of software testing and diagnosis to paying customers.

    We need a concrete and transparent response, not another request to collect details:

    1. Has Garmin formally acknowledged this as a firmware defect?

    2. Which watch models and firmware versions are affected?

    3. Has the defect been reproduced internally?

    4. Is there an internal bug or case reference?

    5. What is the expected firmware version or timeframe for a fix?

    6. Until a fix is available, will Garmin provide an officially supported downgrade to a version before 22.35?

    7. What should users with races and structured interval training do in the meantime?

    “Thank you, we will contact you to collect details” is no longer sufficient. Garmin has already received enough reports to reproduce and classify this issue. Please escalate it to the engineering team, publish an official acknowledgement and provide a real status update.

    A flagship running watch that cannot reliably record pace during fast running is not performing its primary function.

  • I second this. It has been many weeks now and you are now forcing a large portion of your customers to buy non-Garmin devices in order to monitor their exercise (and discouraging them from ever returning). Many of them have been vocal on this issue, but many more people have not spoken up. Surely this should be a deep concern for Garmin... but we have not seen any evidence beyond (in my case) a one-off contact to harvest data.

    Really sad if a watch that expensive can't do their basic job.

    But I guess we are stuck with that bug for a very long time. The development team seems to have moved on to Fenix 9.

  • If that's really true, than Garmin can provide affected users the option to exchange for the F9/E4? My watch is now unreliable for performance.

  • Echoing these words. Garmin is a 23K employee company with $7+ billion revenue in 2025. How can a software bug of this caliber be live for so long on their premium product lines? How much user data can be necessary to identify something that was accidentally introduced in 22.35? It really seems that this major issue has low priority?

  • "Hello Mr. Burkhardt,
    Thank you for your message.
    If you do not wish to wait any longer for a solution, simply return the watch."

    The response from Garmin Germany.

  • Hi, for those who are still experiencing the issue and have already tried the steps from Garmin LF. For those who did a full reset of the watch, did you restore from your backup or not? For my part, (shortly after reporting the issue) I did a full reset and did not use my watch backup. The issue has been resolved for me for over a month now (on the other hand, it takes time to reconfigure everything on the watch). I didn't use it just in case the issue came back through a corrupted backup file. With any luck, you might get rid of the problem just like I did.
