Fenix 8 open water swim distance measurement short

Hi there

I know there are some posts around since the wach came to market (I already posted this some time ago)

Just to see if someone has found any thing new

My take

- I have had all fenix models. This one measures short in open water. full stop.

- so it is not an issue with changing wrist, it is not an issue with GPS and water. It is fenix 8

- I did the three things I know

* data recording every second

* satellites all + multiband

* wait for some time to GPS get acquired BEFORE the swim

I still have less distance recorded.

Anyone has any additional adivice? Other than wait for Fenix 9 and pray for this to be solved.......

  • Anyone has any additional adivice?

    The watch uses the combination of GPS and accelerometer data for estimating the distance. However, it can happen that the accelerometer input is not correctly calibrated. The reasons may vary - for example bad GPS signal, big waves, strong currents, wind, bad technique, or not swimming clean front crawl,...  during the initial phase. Unfortunately, you cannot simply reset the calibration and start anew. The calibration may eventually improve, but it may take a lot of time (depending on conditions). Currently, the only way to start anew, is by resetting the watch to the factory defaults, and then do a few longer OW swims under ideal conditions (no waves, no currents, no wind, clean front crawl at a steady tempo, ...). Then you have a good chance the calibration will be better, and that the watch will continue to estimate the distance more accurately.

  • Hello, i have same problem. But then i swim without HRM Pro-Plus, distance measurement is better.

    Also i swim 3000-3100m,

    Fenix8 +HRM Pro Plus - 2450

    Epix Pro - 2800

    AWU2 - 3000

  • I did so (with all the annoyances related to restore the setup) but I am gettting more or less same results.
    So I will be down on my knees and pray for the super new sw upgrade and / or wait if fenix 9 does it better.

  • It's been years since I reported this issue since Fenix 6, Garmin simply doesn't care about it, and for sure you will find "someone" that will say that for him is perfect! If you want the correct distance, you ho have to use Strava and than use "correct distance" feature. It's a workaroud and you will not know correct distance and pace in real time but it's better than nothing.

  • I'm having a similar problem.  I have been swimming distances of about 2km in open water, in the sea, in almost a straight line along the coast.  Without any accelerometer data, or even if satellite signal is interrupted by water, surely my Fenix8 should be able to calculate the distance over a straight line??? But no.  Google Maps, and my brother's Coros (swimming along side me) agree that the distance is 2km.  But Fenix8 records 880 metres!  What amniotic missing?

  • Same for me. Fenix 8 has been measuring the open water distance incorrectly since the beginning which is surprising given that Epix 2, Fenix 6 and even Fenix 5 were much better from this perspective. I thought I might be imagining things but swam the other day with a friend wearing Fenix 6 and his watch was spot on (2000 m vs 1300 m which is quite a diference isn't it).

  • I can confirm the issue reported in this thread is still happening in the firmware 20.19 in the Fenix 8 47mm Amoled.

    I have been searching and I found the bug very well explained in this video for the Fenix 8 Pro, which does seem to share exactly the same bug that is being reported here (there's an english audio track):

    Go to minute 21:00 . As said, the video is for the Fenix 8 Pro, but the same issue is happening for me in the Fenix 8.

    So Garmin, please, it is very clear something is happening here and this is unacceptable for watches like the Fenix 8 and Fenix 8 Pro.

    @Garmin-Laurie , @Garmin-Jimmy , @Garmin - Chris . I don't know who is the admin who can report this issue to the developers.
