Indoor Climbing does not measure gained height

I usually track indoor climbing activities and was really happy with the recorded height gain and the auto detect feature. Unfortunately, with current software version 12.35 installed on now on my watch the climbed height is not measured anymore. Currently, the height of the climbs (about 18 m wall height) is not anymore recorded.

Did someone of you experience the same issues regarding indoor climbing. Somehow currently there is no heigth gain recorded anymore. Also there was an update between the 5th and the 10th of January.

On the 5th of January it looked like that:

The elevation gain was measured and all routes where started automatically. So the start of the climb was detected.

On the 10th and 13th of January then i had to manually start and end every climb with button presses:

No elevation gain was measured and i assume, that this is the reason that also the auto start and end of the climb is not working anymore.

So it seemed that between the 5th and the 13th something changed and the watch is not recording anymore the height gain in the indoor climbing activity.

  • Update as of February 17th, 2025:

Garmin is in the process of reviewing reports for this concern being reported for indoor climb on the fenix 8.

Per some of the other comments discussion the same, we are recommending to please try holding the power button on your watch until it shuts off completely (takes about 10-15 seconds of holding). After the watch shuts down, *wait 30 seconds and then press the top left button to power the watch on again.

Upon rebooting the watch, please follow the steps in Troubleshooting the fēnix 8 Altimeter and Barometer to manually calibrate your watch's altimeter to see if this resolves the issue.

If you are still experiencing the concern, please send me a direct message or contact Garmin Support providing the answers to the following questions as outlined below:

    • When did this start happening?
    • Did you change any settings (route stat tracking or anything else)?
    • Does this happen in any other activities, such as Bouldering, or do other activities record elevation without issue?
    • What is the altimeter mode set to on your watch? This setting can be found in Menu > Watch Settings > System > Altimeter & Barometer > Sensor Mode.

Upon receiving your response, I will get the info submitted over to our quality & engineering team for further review.

    - Thank you

  • After restarting, the issue was not replicated anymore. Before, no meter climbed even for bouldering. For any other activities, the barometer recording was all OK. (run/trailrun/skimountaneering).

  • Thank you for posting the solution from the recommended steps.

In relation to the Bouldering activity part you mentioned, the Bouldering app can display ascent climb info during the activity through the data screen options...however, I wanted to note that the Bouldering app will by design will not record ascent/descent info to the activity synced over from the watch when viewing the data in Connect. This info can be referenced on-screen but not post-activity in the account.

  • This is also happening to my Fenix 7 pro

  • It's quite terrible that this is taking so long to be fixed for a watch that costs so much!

  • Same here with a new Fénix 8. ! I’ve been trying everything I can think of to no avail.

  • Same here with a new Fénix 8. I’ve been trying everything, but no ascent stats or auto detection for bouldering or climbing.

  • The fix is restarting the watch, have you tried that?

  • Restated twice now. Nothing. I’ll try again tomorrow before my climbing session. Will also try recalibrating gps.

  • Epix 2 here, this issue is still occuring for me as well. I have rebooted multiple times. Please help.
