How does AOD, Gesture work during activites, sleep mode etc?

I'm thinking of upgrading from 7X to 8 and it is tough choice between flashy AMOLED and MIP. Can some one please clarify following regarding AMOLED displays? I'd prefer AOD off and wrist gesture on during normal usage. With this settings, is following possible?

- can I set AOD to be off (completely black display) during activity and also disable wrist gesture at the same time? So basically during activity, display is completely turned off ("immediately"?) and no chance of accidental waking up by wrist gesture? If so, how will I then wake up the display? By pressing button?

- if above is true, can the same be set for night when sleeping? E.g. between some hours, no AOD, no wrist gesture

  • As a MIP fan I was also debating whether to finally switch to AMOLED and I'm glad I did, although I have yet to see how big a hit I take on battery life and how well it handles strong direct sunlight.

To answer your question, you can set AOD off and gestures on in smartwatch mode, and set them both off separately for activities. Clicking the upper-left button or double-tapping the display will turn it on. During night time both are turned off by default and as far as I can tell this cannot be changed.

  • Agreed. Mine is default with touch lock and touch are on at system settings.  During sleep, the display and gesture are off.  My touch is on but it's only showing outline of the hour and minute plus a few small icons for alarm, etc when tap on the watch face.  It works every well for me if I wake up during the night.  You can turn off the touch and use the button to wake up the display.  It still only shows the outline of the hour and minute during sleep hours.

  • Thank you, and can the display be completely off during sleep and activity or just dimmed?

  • it's completely off on mine and outline of hour and minutes when the screen is ON during sleeping hours..  I have to touch the screen to wake it up.  Mine has gesture disable and touch On in sleep focus settings.   You can change touch to OFF in focus, then you will need button to wake up the screen.

  • Display can be off during sleep mode. It turns on when a button is pressed only if you disable touch in sleep mode too. Those are my sleep focus settings and they work as expected.

You can set the same for all activities (ADO and gesture are set in activity focus for all activities) and touch on/off per activity.

I haven't tested it like that during activity but mine are ADO off, gesture on and that works as expected, too.

BTW, I had to turn off ADO for activities as the display was too dark in sunlight, regardless of the angle. And I am not talking about midsummer sunny noon, it was a pale northern hemisphere autumn sun trying its way through clouds.
