lactate-threshold auto-detect is drunk in v26.09 ?

my Fenix7s greeted me with this at the end of my run today

nice but except one problem

I never ran that fast and my heartrate never exceeded 155bpm, it was recovery

and note that I don't use optical HR but rather HRM-Pro-Plus so the HR is always accurate

and the pace doesn't use GPS but rather Stryd forced for distance/pace

what's extra weird is I cannot find this new LT recorded anywhere in the FIT file in the two previously undocumented locations

my Fenix6s never did this, it was VERY stubborn about new LT with the same devices/configuration, usually had to be running as hard as I could into the wind for it to trigger

what's also weird is when I was setting up the Fenix7s a couple weeks ago and it imported previous activities

it "invented" a new LT pace/HR out of the blue too based on those activities, it was 168bpm x 7:10 so this is vaguely plausible/logical

but I still don't see where it came from, I never went near any of this today:

  • btw this is what Connect shows for my activity

it was a recovery run, I didn't even come close to those numbers and there's no data dropout from the HRM or Stryd

  • My understanding (and I'm happy to be corrected) is that the F7 will project your LTHR given certain run conditions and that you don't need to have actually run at/beyond your LTHR for that calculation to be initiated.

If you are happy that the new number looks to be in the correct range then I'd suggest you just go with it. Mine calculated a LTHR of 188 a couple of weeks ago (well beyond my Max HR) and threw out my Training Load numbers as I hadn't noticed for a few days. FWIW I've now disabled its ability to set my HR Zones automatically according to a calculated LTHR.

  • Yes, watches supporting the "Improved Lactate Threshold" detection (and F7 is one), do indeed estimate LTHR even at sub-LT efforts, and without chest strap HRM, and also without the need of doing a dedicated LTHR test first. • thanks for teaching me about that!

totally missed that "improvement" in the Fenix7 vs Fenix6

though I am not sure I trust Firstbeat guessing quite that hard with so little data

over the years I've noticed the Garmin always loves it when you run "easy" and projects far too optimistic vo2max and performance condition

then on days running hard it realizes reality is not that good and that performance doesn't scale like magic

remember the first generation Race Predictor?

lol, it was way way too generous but the newer ones at least look at past few weeks of running in balance
