Sudden Battery Drain at Fenix 7 Saphire Solar

Hi everyone, hello Garmin engineers,

I’m reaching out because my Garmin Fenix 7 has had a significant battery issue from the very beginning. The battery sporadically drains completely within just a few hours, even when the watch was fully charged beforehand. This problem appeared shortly after purchase and has reoccurred several times since then.

I have already performed multiple factory resets. For a short period, the issue seemed to disappear, but it has now returned. I’m also concerned that these repeated rapid discharges may have already damaged the battery.

After reviewing the official Garmin Forums, it’s clear that this issue has been reported many times before. A search for “Fenix 7 – Battery Drain” shows 4,733 results. These posts span several years - from around the time I purchased my watch in December 2024 up to today - and the timestamps and firmware versions make the pattern easy to follow.

My question is: Is there a technical fix or a firmware update that permanently resolves this sudden battery drain issue?

Thank you in advance for any guidance or information.
LM

PS: Just to add: Currently my Garmin Fenix 7 runs firmware 25.11 - same behaviour was with previous firmware versions since Dec 2024. Would be nice to get an answer on my question above.

  • I have the same problem and I must say that is the most annoying issue for me, because it happens randomly and you have no indication of it until you realize that your watch is dead.

My recommendation is to perform a factory reset and to use the watch for at least a week without any additional widgets or apps installed.

Start reinstalling your apps and widgets one by one with at least a couple of days in between after that first week and it should be pretty clear as to which app widget or config you're applying which is causing the battery drain.

I agree that you shouldn't have to do this and that Garmin should make it very obvious as to what it is which is causing the excess power utilisation, but they're not there with this watch and this is the process that we have to go through.

  • Battery life on Garmin devices can vary significantly depending on which features are enabled and how the watch is being used. Things like GPS activities, Pulse Ox, music, notifications, and certain watch faces or apps can all add up over time.

If you’re seeing faster drain than expected, a good first step is to review which features are currently active. Adjusting settings like Pulse Ox (set to sleep-only or off), reducing backlight brightness/duration, limiting Wi-Fi use, or switching GPS modes can often make a noticeable difference.

We’ve put together a helpful guide that walks through some of the most common reasons for faster battery drain, and offers optimization tips: Why Is the Battery of My Garmin Watch Draining Faster Than Expected?

If the battery drain still seems excessive after reviewing the settings and usage, feel free to share a bit more about how you’re using the watch (activity types, settings in use, etc.) and how many days the device lasts after being charged to 100%.

  • Thank you very much for your response. I tried all things already, but the behaviour / the error is different:

The battery discharges sporadically / unpredictably / inexplicably and becomes completely empty within a very few hours, even though the watch was fully charged shortly beforehand, is in airplane mode, PulseOx, GPS and Bluetooth are disabled, no synchronization is taking place, no music is being played, etc., and all apps and similar features are turned off.

This has happened several times, most recently just a few days ago, currently with firmware version 25.11. In these cases, I charged the watch to 100% in the evening, did not wear it overnight, and all features were disabled with airplane mode enabled (no GPS, no Bluetooth, no pulse oximeter, no apps, no music, no synchronization, touchscreen off, light off, etc.). Nevertheless, the watch was completely drained by the morning (0%), despite having been fully charged the evening before.

This behaviour occurs sporadically, unpredictably, and cannot be reproduced. It is particularly frustrating when the watch is then intended to be used for its planned purpose. This issue is not related to increased power consumption caused by any apps, modes, or settings - everything that could consume extra energy is switched off.

This problem first occurred shortly after purchase and has since reappeared repeatedly, though always sporadically. The battery may already have suffered damage due to these sporadic rapid discharges. I have also reset the watch to factory settings. For a time, the problem seemed to be resolved, but it has since occurred again.

Could you reply to this again please? I would appreciate this very much. As I assume, you are a Garmin employee, we could also open a private chat, if this is possible, thus I could also share personal data such as S/N etc. if that makes sense.

    Thank you very much.

  • Exactly what you said.

This behaviour occurs sporadically, unpredictably, and cannot be reproduced with any specific action.

Last time it happened to me when I was not wearing the watch (which is really rare).

I have also tried factory reset and it didn't help.

  • Have similar issue. My watch discharges quickly after it goes down to 35%,after whch it just drains to 0 % in few hours. Has been like that since I bought it. I rwported it to Garmin but the issue was never resolved.

  • I emailed   and  since you were still experiencing issues. Please double-check that you received this.

  • Thank you again for your help.

We wrote so far about the sudden battery drain behaviour on a fēnix® 7 Pro Sapphire Solar, 1.25 years old. We received an offer from Garmin to replace this one with a refurbished device, but we do not know, if this makes sense, because this problem meanwhile occured not just on this device, but also on a brand new fēnix® 7X Pro Sapphire Solar, which is just 6 weeks old.

And that’s why I am contacting you again. Because of this and as many users report similar issues here in the forum, I meanwhile understand the “sudden battery drain“ problem to be a generic problem with this type of watch, isn't it?

The watch, on which the same problem occured, is a brand new Fenix 7X Saphire Solar I own since 13 Feb 2026. It worked fine the last 6 weeks, but what happened this week? At lunch time, the battery status was above 50% - and 3hrs later it was 4% only. Then the battery status was decreasing 1% each hr.

Nothing is switched on and all is off: no GPS, no Bluetooth, no pulse oximeter, no apps, no music, no synchronisation, touchscreen off, backlight off, etc., flight mode is on. The watch is just running in the “clock mode”. There was no battery problem the last 6 weeks, no config changes, no new installations since the first days and now this sudden battery drain.

Interestingly, after a switch off/on of the whatch this propblem disappeard, the watch is running nice since then, 1-2% drain per day.

Because the same problem has now appeared in my family with a 1.25 year old Fenix 7 and a brand‑new Fenix 7X device, I believe this is a general issue with this type of watch. I never had anything similar with my old Fenix 3 - it ran perfectly for six years until the GPS function eventually failed. But now I’m experiencing this sudden battery‑drain issue even with my completely new watch.

A workaround could perhaps be to switch-off/on the watch after a few weeks, but this is not a bug fix for such an expensive device.

What is your’s and Garmin’s view on this, please?

    Many Thanks

  • Hello, everyone.

I have the same problem (7S Pro Solar). The sudden battery drain appears somehow at regular intervals (1-2 months) and it has nothing to do with the current state of the watch. I have experienced the start of the sudden drain in various situations:
     - immediately after full charging to 100%.
     - while an activity was on going.
     - normal wearing of the watch.

The only solution that has worked for me (every time) is to Power OFF/ON the watch.
Of course, you need to spot the drain as soon as possible...

Exactly. Garmin offering me to pay for not new but recertified watch that is likely to have this issue as well (possibly some others as well since it not knew watch and it is questionable how good battery is of recertified watch anyhow) is a no go.
