ClimbPro climb statistics are not recorded in Garmin Connect

Hi,

On my Edge Explore 2 with ClimbPro, my climbs are recorded in Garmin Connect. When looking back on my activity, the climbs that were identified and processed through ClimPro are listed on my activity report and I can even check my performances for each climb, which includes heart rate avg and max, cadence and speed data, among other stuff.

I've started recording my cycling activities with my Fenix 7S Pro so that I can make use of the additional metrics included in the watch (Training Effect, Training Status and other minor stuff), since the Edge Explore 2 doesn't support either Physio TrueUp nor Unified Training Status. I load my courses on the watch and ClimbPro is enabled and works as expected during the activity.
However, my climbs and climb statistics are not saved into Garmin Connect. There is no mention of any climb when my activity is recorded with the watch, despite ClimbPro being active.

I also use ClimbPro on my watch with sideloaded courses for hiking, and while ClimbPro also works as expected during the hike, climbs are not saved into Garmin Connect either.

Is that a bug, or is climb recording only a thing for Edge cycling computers and/or cycling activity (not hiking) ? Since this feature seems to be linked to ClimbPro, I was expecting it to be present on my ClimbPro enabled watch.

Cheers

  • I checked the content of two of my cycling FIT files using an third party fit file viewer tool, one made with my Edge Explore 2 and one with my Fenix 7S Pro. Both with ClimbPro enabled.

Both files show similar ClimbPro events with timestamps for start of climb and completion of climbs. Therefore it seems to me both devices record the activity in a way that allows the same processing of the ClimbPro data on Garmin Connect. Yet the climb analytics is just missing from the activity page made with the Fenix watch.

Here's what it looks like with an activity recorded on my Edge Explore 2

    But on my Fenix :

With an Edge activity, climbs icons are also displayed on the map track as well as on the altitude graph. All of which are missing on my Fenix activities.

This is a bit annoying because I would rather just record my cycling activities with my Edge Explore 2, but doing so messes with my watch data, as both devices are not compatible, and would make me miss out on the additional metrics I already mentioned. The watch is generally a superior device and provides more data. Therefore I start the activity on both devices when cycling but only keep the one from the watch at the end, which to be honest is quite ludicrous.
But now it seems there is in fact one thing the Edge Explore 2 provides that the watch does not, despite both devices having ClimbPro, unless this is a bug.

So I wonder : Can anyone who uses ClimbPro on their Fenix 7 watch (preferably for cycling, but I would assume all activity profiles that support ClimbPro are concerned, including hiking) tell me if they have climb analytics on their Garmin Connect activity pages ?

    Cheers

  • I use my Fenix 7 for running and that will invoke ClimbPro as I run, but there is no post-run display of it on Connect.

I have an Edge 840 for cycling and I do see the post-ride ClimbPro graphs on Connect.

I can't say I've ever bothered to.look at them but I can understand your frustration.

  • Thanks a lot for the feedback. That's what I was suspecting but I'm glad for the confirmation.

As a beginner cyclist I actually found the feature quite useful to evaluate my progress more easily on some of my regular courses. Not a huge deal of course but yeah a mild frustration.
I started feeling the limits of the Edge Explore 2 too much so I got a Fenix 7 so that I would have pretty much all features for all outdoor activities (including having more than 3 cycling activity types, unlike the EE2, despite it being a dedicated cycling device). I understand how it makes sense for Edge devices to have unique features, but I dislike that in this instance it's an undocumented one.

Changing for a 840 is something I'm considering.

  • You could create Segments for some of your regular climbs. That's done in Connect and is (as fast as I'm aware) device agnostic.

  • Since when this feature is on explore 2? I've used mine 3 times, with ClimbPro on and I don't see this option in Garmin Connect!! I already had an activity with plenty of elevations,,, how is that?

  • That is a good idea, thank you !

I am not very familiar with segments and I believed it was only a Strava thing, but apparently you can indeed create segments with Garmin. It requires a bit more work but on the plus side would also allow me to compare more portions (well, segments I suppose) of my courses than just climbs.

I'll definitely look into it !

  • I've had my EE2 since last winter and as far as I can remember, this feature was there for the start.

In my mind this feature was a full part of ClimbPro, as it's basically a reproduction of the ClimbPro display but on Connect, with post-course analysis of climbs, hence my disappointment when I realized by ClimbPro Fenix did not have it. Nothing could have let me know that it's in fact an Edge feature more than a ClimbPro feature.

I don't know why you don't have it ? Are you sure ClimbPro is running ? For it to work on the Edge I load a course onto Connect (or create it from there I suppose) before sending it to the Edge Explore 2. Then the Edge can display the climbs on the course details. The feature has to be enabled of course. If you do get ClimbPro alerts (start / completion) when riding your courses I don't see why you wouldn't get the climbs reports on Connect, assuming you save the activity on the Edge.

However sine having the watch in addition to my EE2, I have noticed strange behavior on my course list in Connect. Some of them (imported into Connect back when I only had the EE2) do not show climbs anymore when looking at the course details from the app. My instinctive guess is that Garmin Connect is conflicted between showing the climbs because I have an Edge device, and not showing the climbs because I also have a Fenix that do not show climbs.
That's just a guess, but if you also have a Fenix with an EE2, maybe you are also subject to this same conflict.

Otherwise I would suggest posting into the Edge Explore 2 forum.

  • Unfortunately, Fenix watches do not support 1) showing climbs during free rides 2) showing climbs in post-ride analysis. Looks like you need an Edge x40 or x50 series for that. Kind of a bummer. (sorry, you need x40 or x50 for showing climbs WITHOUT a track. Your Edge Explore 2 supports the climbs themselves, but not in free ride mode)
