how to restore an accidentally deleted preloaded sports activity (sail.fit)

Answering myself:

Ask nicely the support.

Or just wait for the next update and it will reappear automatically.

Another option would be a reinstall of current firmware (as this file reappeared after upgrade) 

But this option seems not possible anymore. I tried according to

Is there any possibility to reinstall current firmware?

My suggestions: Go to Garmin Express on a computer (garmin.com/express), select CIQ, then select "All" in the drop-down in the upper right.  Then select the not-installed file to install (see below).

If that does not work, reset your watch to default settings and re-pair with your phone and that should restore it.

I would not recommend going into the test mode like this.  That can cause significant problems on your device

Yeah, I forgot this disclaimer. But right you are, I'd always think twice before doing things like that and to seek advice from support is probably the best idea anyway,

Garmin Express method did not work - as I wrote above- because this special activityis not present on IQ...

About the reset I am still wondering what exactly is restored. It is not a full flash like on phones but a mix of restoring some defaults, deleting some files (like music) , but keeping maps untouched?

Btw.: I found the acctivity inbetween. But it has the german name in my case - segeln.fit - that being the reason why search at first didn't gave any results.

I'm not sure wether that would serve your purposes though. Which software version are you on? I have versions for 10.44, 10.46 and 9.33...different file size and content between 10.xx and 9.33.

I already got it back, during update from 10.44 to 10.46 :)

That is very unusual to rename the activity files according to the device language 

Another option to reinstall would be placing the GUPDATE.gcd file on the device, right?

But where can one get it from? Seems all publicly open versions download links are hashed and I could not find the one for 10.44 (I was on).

That won't work by itself. You could try and place an empty file named force.tmp next to it into the /Garmin folder same as you would do when you want to backdate. Might work for the same version as well.

You'd have to save it right after GE downloaded it onto your device using file explorer before you disconnect from PC. OR  - since you have a normal F7 - sign up for beta. Then you would get a link to an alpha version with includes the previous released version together with the instructions. Won't work for my Tactix though since there is no Beta programm for Tactix. Also I would check with support first. I have seen Fenix packages where the version for backdating was way smaller than the original version. Reason might be, that not the full package was updated by the alpha/beta and thus only a part of the full package is needed. But it seems wise to check that with your friendly support for clarification.
